Report: Promotion hopefuls Ryhope CW came away with a 3-1 victory over a hard working Willington side this afternoon.
Willington came into the match on the back of an important victory over Birtley Town but were without Adam Comby, Anthony Lee and goalkeeper Jack Patton who was ruled out after picking up an injury in the warm-up. They welcomed back Lewis Milner with Will Preston, Peter Wakefield and Anthony Telfer also coming into the starting line up.
Ryhope enjoyed the lion’s share of possession in the early going but struggled to inject any pace into the game whilst Willington carried a threat on the break and came close to breaking the deadlock when Telfer saw his shot from the edge of the area rebound back off the inside of the post.
It was Ryhope who then took the lead through a well worked set piece as Leon Ryan won the ball at the back post and nodded back across goal for a tap in from close range. 1-0.
Ryhope started the second half well and Willington had their goalkeeper to thank for keeping them in the game as Wakefield first tipped a goalbound effort onto the bar before saving well with his feet shortly after.
Ryhope did then get the second goal they were looking for as a long ball forward was flicked on and their centre forward made himself a yard before firing home low to the goalkeepers left. 2-0.
Willington had been competitive throughout and they quickly got back into the came as a fine delivery from Reece Brown led to a goalmouth scramble with the ball eventually being turned home by Will Preston. 2-1.
Willington continued to work hard to get the equaliser but struggled to create any clear cut chances against a well organised opponent and the closest they came was having a penalty appeal turned down before Ryhope made the game safe late on as a good ball in from wide was headed home at the back post. 3-1.
