Norman Wright Cup Final - 18 April 2014

BOWES WIN THE WRIGHT CUP

Bowes picked up the Norman Wright trophy for the second time in beating Witton Park 2-0 in the final at Hall, Lane, Willington this morning.

With their minds perhaps on last week's league defeat at their hands of their opponents, Bowes started with caution. And they almost paid the penalty after just five minutes when a cross was turned wide of the open goal from inside the six yard box.

Witton Park looked more likely to break the deadlock early on and they twice went close before Tommy Hutchinson sent a header just wide in Bowes best attempt with half time approaching.

Having withstood the early first half pressure Bowes confidence grew and they were the better side in the second period. The Willington pitch, though in very good order, was rock hard and both sides struggled to find fluency. It was Bowes who took the lead in the 52nd minute when Simon Rathbone rose to head past keeper Sanderson. Witton sent a couple of chances narrowly wide but Bowes had the bulk of the play and you could sense it was their day when Jason Tobbell forced the ball home to make it 2-0 five minutes from time.

Nicky Bellew received the man of the match award when Willington FC chairman Bob Nicholls presented the awards.

Witton Park proved good losers and from a league perspective it was good to see both sides mix in the bar after the game.

WAITES CUP WIN FOR RAILWAY

Shildon Railway picked up their first trophy since joining the league in beating Bishop Hogans 3-0 at Hall Lane, Willington this morning.

Thomas Louden bagged the opener for Railway after 20 minutes and they missed several chances to increase their lead during the first half. Tom Robinson slotted the ball home from close range on the hour to open up a two goal cushion but Hogans went close with a neat lob that bounced back off the bar. Hogans kept plugging away but Matthew Wilson put the result beyond doubt with a third for Railway five minutes from time. Jay Rose of Shildon was man of the match.
