Wilmslow Hurricanes won a pulsating Sandbach Invitational tournament final by 5 tries to 4 over Winnington Park with Sam Braddock
touching down in the final seconds to win the game after Wilmslow had bullied Park into turning over with barely a minute to go through teak tough defence.
Attack has been the squad's forte this season and only in the last few weeks have we made considerable progress in the art of defence and today the boys put in a masterclass of tagging led by defensive lynchpins Laurie Lee
, Josh Chalk
and Thomas Wilson
. As well as Sam's efforts other tries were scored by Rory Tomlinson
, Edward Pickersgill
and Ross Livingston
. The team was ably captained by Jamie Taylor
who had a strong allround performance.
Earlier, the Hurricanes had to endure a nailbiting wait to see if they would proceed to the final after drawing with Sandbach 6-6 in the most entertaining match of the day between two evenly matched teams and Wilmslow advanced to the final on a try countback.
The Hurricanes started with a win over Sandbach C before drawing with Bowdon A. They then beat Bowdon B in the quarter final.
Wilmslow Lions did extremely well in making the quarter final, losing to eventual finalists Winnington Park 4-2. They came up against very tough opposition in the pool matches losing to Sandbach A but beating Bowdon B. The boys showed great heart and determination and will be a real threat to other teams in the Cheshire Cup next week. Coach Jamie Finnegan singled out Joseph Oliver
, Thomas Sheldon
and Joshua Ingham-Munns for their fine effort on attack and defence while William Mitchell
also scored some important tries for the Lions.
The coaching team are extremely proud of all the boys today, they displayed great team spirit and sportmanship on the pitch and both teams gave their uttermost on the pitch - all that any coach can ask. Well done everyone!
