Three matches though did survive the weather but the results didn’t affect the Wolves tenth position in the fourteen club league. It’s very crowded though in the middle of the league with very little to choose between the Wolves and the four above them. Their campaign will resume in January with a difficult away assignment at Leigh on the 7th. followed by another testing encounter on the 14th. at home against Widnes, who against all expectations at the start of the season are now soaring clear in second place.
Back at the Memorial Ground, or to be more precise up on the Jim Evison Field, play was possible. Not for the first time by any means have these pitches rescued what would otherwise have been a barren afternoon. There were Christmas Card views in cold frosty conditions as the Vikings and Developmentals maintained their challenge at the top of the Salford University Leagues 1 and 4S respectively against the stark backdrop of the Styal woods and the crusty topping of snow. It was a raw afternoon but the eighty or so players from Wilmslow, Waterloo and Heaton Moor were not lacking in either effort or enthusiasm and both games produced moments worth watching.
The Vikings scored five tries to see off Waterloo by 33-15. They had started slowly to concede an early try to the visitors but once Chris Lee crossed the line to level matters mid way through the first half only one outcome looked likely. Prop Jack Walmsley showed some unlikely soccer skills to dribble the ball around two defenders before collapsing on it in a heap for the second try just before half time. An impressive surge from No. 8, Alex Taylor, saw him stretching out a telescopic arm for the third early in the second period and the exciting young winger Matt Jones rounded off matters with two well taken tries either side of two replies from Waterloo. There were solid performances from young Adam Hewitt in the second row and No. 10, Kevin Burge-Jones just to remind coach Giles Heagerty of the potential of some of the young players challenging for team places on the Wolves. The result puts the Vikings equal with league leaders Birkenhead Park but second on points difference.
On the adjoining pitch, it was the showdown between the second and fourth placed teams in USL4S. The Developmentals actually started with two games in hand against the leaders Trafford MV and with the only unbeaten record in the league. Three tries and three penalties were enough to see Matt Potter’s team home against Heaton Moor by 28-0 for a four pointer and with a vastly superior points difference to the top of their league.
Wilmslow’s rugby players had good reason to enjoy their Christmas bash in the clubhouse afterwards and can look forward to the new year with eager anticipation.
