The final curtain call came for ‘Crawford’s Colts’ on Sunday 19th February 2012, as the most successful team ever documented at Wilmslow rugby club closed its ‘Junior Account’ as ¼ finalists in the 2012 Cheshire Cup campaign. Once more this team coming together from its Universities and placements across the whole of the UK to train an hour before ‘kick –off’ and then play first and foremost; For each other, and the honour of WRUFC in this Cheshire Cup qualifier.

The Match report is brief as there are more important considerations and thanks to be made;

Wilmslow Snr Colts -17 v Sandbach Snr Colts -17
A fast paced game played by two strong teams, two quality tries by ‘The Wolves’ from Toby Rowe and Max Smith, converted and added to by a single penalty from the boot of Ed Armitage. Every Wilmslow player gave good account and at no time was found to be wanting in their individual or team performance. Unfortunately the score was matched by an identical tally from Sandbach, via two unfortunate intercept tries, regrettably ‘The away rule’ applies in cases of a draw and the Sandbach team goes through to the next round.

Moving on………..

In 1823, William Webb Ellis, having escaped the cathedral city of Salford, and holding a fine disregard for the round ball game, picked- up a ball into his arms whilst a student at Rugby school and ran with it, creating the noble sport we all know today, that combines, ‘speed and skill’ with ‘strength and toughness’ whilst being ‘fast-paced’ and ‘ferocious’. The next 188 years as they say… ’Is History’

It is an understatement to say that these skills alone were demonstrated by the players of WRUFC Senior Colts team both on Sunday and in every other game they have played, Their most prized and unique fellowship, encouraged each other and over a period of years, this has led to success and camaraderie both on and off the field of play.

How did this all start ? Well as has been recorded in part previously; At close to 6'9", Geoff Crawford a "pillar' of WRUFC in more ways than one commenced his own rugby career at Wilmslow in 1986, and as he concluded his own playing career, in 1999 / 2000 he picked up the mantle of ‘Lead Coach’ bringing together the most successful team on-record ever documented at The Memorial ground (See Link). The key to success being simply ‘teamwork’ and ‘enjoyment’. This is the beauty of our sport, where you have ‘fifteen’ acting ‘as one’ on the field, and many more on the bench and in the stands both participating and enjoying the challenges put before them.

The initial ‘Coming together’ was the beginning, The ‘staying together’ was progress, and the ability to work together enjoying the game led to continuing success;

2011-12 Senior Colts Cheshire Cup ¼ Finalists
2010-11 Senior Colts Cheshire Plate winners
2009-10 Raging Bull Junior Colts League Cup winners Junior Colts Cheshire Cup Runners up
2007-08 Under 15's Cheshire Cup quarter-finalists Caldy Festival runners up
2006-07 Under 14's Cheshire Cup runners-up
2005/06 Under 13's Cheshire Cup semi-finalists
2004/05 Under 12's Cheshire Cup winners Wilmslow Festival Winners
2003/04 Under 11's Cheshire Cup winners Wilmslow Festival Winners

2001/02 Under 9's Cheshire Cup Winners Rochdale RUFC Festival /Tournament Winners Nottingham RUFC¼ finalists at a National RFU Championship

Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence secures results. The Challenge has been laid down for our Junior teams to remain cohesive and beat the above club record

And finally from the coaching team …..Some Thanks ……..

The idea to challenge this last Cheshire Cup campaign came from within the team’s ranks; this led to a further inordinate amount of work for Tim Street who yet again ensured that all the logistics and admin was in place. Tim’s attention to detail and commitment behind the scenes is frequently overlooked so a big thanks to him.

Sunday had people traveling from far away and then players playing out of position. Each and every person involved in this campaign should be very proud of their commitment and performance.

On Behalf of Geoff Crawford / Tim Street / Nick Jones /Roy Forsyth / Peter Stern would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you over the years for providing us with some very memorable rugby moments over the past seasons. We have seen the transformation from Boys to Men.

You are the most successful junior squad that Wilmslow RUFC has ever had and should be very proud of that. We wish you every success in your studies and futures and hope you keep a close tie to the rugby family. We hope you continue your rugby careers with the same success that you have demonstrated so far and continue to play in the same way.....with a big smile on your face…. So don’t be upset because it’s over guys, Smile because it Happened !!!

Keith, will always welcome you at the Bar! As will Scanners be happy to buy the beer.
