Welcome to Winchester Minis

Welcome to Winchester RFC Minis, one of the largest minis sections in Hampshire with over 350 players in age groups from U6s to U12s.

We always welcome new players, whether transferring from other clubs or new to the game.

New players are allowed to attend on a trial basis for two weeks (subject to a online or signed consent form) before being required to become a member of WRFC.

If you would like to join us please either come down to the club on a Sunday or speak to the relevant age group manager or coach.

Please follow the link to the relevant age group for information on the coaches / managers and contact details.

Age groups and rules of play

Please note that, per RFU guidelines, our age groups follow school years as set out below:
U6 - Year 1
U7 – Year 2
U8 – Year 3
U9 – Year 4
U10 – Year 5
U11 – Year 6
U12 – Year 7

WRFC plays to the latest RFU regulations, the New Rules of Play.

The New Rules of Play promote a “Child First” approach to rugby focusing on skill development whilst gradually adding the elements of the modern game.
U7s and U8s are introduced to the sport through non-contact “Tag” Rugby. As players become more confident they progress to contact through adding the tackle at U9s.
From this point rules are added incrementally until players are ready to move into the full 15 player game when they move to Juniors section at U13s.

Training and fixtures

Training and matches generally take place on Sunday mornings between 10am and 12 noon from the beginning of September until the end of April. The length of the session is dependent on the age group. There are also occasional Saturday fixtures and mid-week training for the older age groups,

It is a requirement of WRFC that all players are accompanied by a responsible adult during any participation in training and matches.

Please ensure players arrive appropriately prepared for any rugby session or fixture.
This includes being dressed to suit the weather conditions, with a labelled drink and with any safety equipment.
At WRFC mouthguards / gum shields are recommended for U7s and U8s but mandatory for U9s upwards.

The Minis fixtures can be found on the website at
Please check regularly as fixtures do change.

WRFC aim to achieve a balance of home training, festivals / league fixtures and joint training with local clubs. Whilst players often enjoy competitive play the Club believe that player development and inclusion are paramount and this can be better supported through an appropriate mix of training and competition.

Coaches and volunteers

WRFC is proud to have approximately 80 volunteers who support the Minis section,
This includes coaches, managers, first aiders, safeguarding assistants and general assistants.
All volunteers are registered with the club, appropriately qualified and hold valid Disclosure Barring Service certificates (previously CRB).

WRFC takes its safeguarding responsibilities seriously and requires all age groups to comply with our safeguarding policies. If you have any concerns please contact our Safeguarding team at

Kind regards
