Mixed Progress in EH Championship
Debut brace for Smithard and GK heroics as our Mixed team progress to the 4th Round
After turning up late and having a small kit debacle in which not only did half the players try to start the game in the same numbers but somewhat more comically the keeper had forgotten her overshorts so was forced to play in her boyfriends (clean) pants.
Wimborne graciously delayed the start of the game for Pawley to have a tactical chunder on the side of the road which proved to be a fatal error for them.
The first half started slow and fairly even with Winchester making the most of the space they were allowed in the centre of the pitch to create multiple chances. The Wimborne keeper put on an excellent show and was the stand out player of the game. Without him the scoreline could have been significantly more.
Winchesters patience paid off and they were rewarded with a goal in the first half. After an absolutely textbook save from the Winchester goalkeeper the scoreline at half time was 1-0 Winchester.
In the second half Winchester really put the pressure on which began to cause divisions among the Wimborne players.
It wasn't long into the second half before the chances came for Winchester, a very tactical substitution introduced Smithard with a brace of well taken strikes.
There were a couple of chances for the Wimborne team, which were artfully deflected straight back at their faces and chests by the outstanding Shelley in goal for Winchester..
The score stood at 3-0 and Wimbornes defeat was imminent. Their players were getting frustrated and beginning to get far less sportsmanly, tanking the ball at Winchesters female players on more than one occasion and elbowing them off the ball.
Luckily the match was sealed for Winchester by a final goal, a Micklethwaite short corner blast setting up Swift for a trademark tap in, leaving the scoreline at 4-0. A great run out and an excellent result for what can only be described as a distinctly unprepared Winchester side.
