Men's 1's vs. Tulse Hill and Dulwich 1's
Men's 1's take top spot and our one win from promotion
Tulse Hill & Dulwich 1sts 1 - Winchester 1sts 3
The second double header weekend, short of a couple of regulars, Winchester had the possibility of losing out in the promotion race.
Having survived an early Tulse Hill shot wide of the mark, Winchester settled into a strong rhythm not seen for a few weeks Pressure told with two penalty corners to Winchester early on but without success. Half way through the first period, Winchester’s attack pressed home in the Tulse Hill circle and Harry Talks scrambled the ball into the net from close range.
A marked increase in the Winchester work rate ensued with Kevin Boniface especially dominant in defence. Tulse Hill had the ball in the Winchester net only to be disallowed for backsticks. They were awarded a penalty corner close to half-time from which they scored high into the goal following a failure by the defence to clear the initial stop. An intense period of Tulse Hill pressure followed through to the whistle.
Tulse Hill pushed Winchester hard in the first few minutes of the second half but Kent Langridge made a fine solo run up field and Ben Hibberd put the ball in the net from a fine spin drag flick after six minutes. From here on in, Winchester made the majority of the running bringing some good saves from the Tulse Hill keeper. Hibberd scored with a great drag flick from a Winchester short corner with ten minutes to go and they maintained constant drive and pressure through to the final whistle.
With Oxford University losing 1-0 to Holcombe, Winchester go into their last game next week at Ashford top of the league but still not 100% certain of maintaining promotion.
