I'm at an age where my back goes out more than I do!
There were a few changes from the first outing for Dave Allcocks Veterans side, no Henry, Hodgy, Cornesy, Luty, Billy and others whose names didn’t end in a ‘y’. No matter, the players still arrived with the enthusiasm of a bunch of young 30 somethings and made the females eyes water, such was the smell of ralgex around Burrows Hill.
Macclesfield were subject to a storming start from Park but after 20 minutes or more(felt like 4 hours to some of us) there was still no score on the board as Maccs big No. 10 and the squat inside centre skilfully kicked for position. The first points actually came from a visitors attack when Millington & Gibson stole the ball which resulted in a genuinely good try, working between the forwards & backs right up until Pickering fed 2nd row Paul Dean for the try which, as hard as he tried to be held up, he eventually put to ground.
The next try was a solo effort from Pete Higson, the only thing missing from this one perhaps was the Benny Hill theme tune. Kev Davies added another in the second half before Macc enjoyed a spell of pressure in Parks 22, resulting in a try and a penalty too for a close finish. Parks No. 9 then practically killed the game off with a quick tap penalty from fully 1.5m out, sheer pace sending him crashing through the defence to score and thrust himself right up there as joint top scorer with Millington, Higson, Dean & Davies, all on 1.
An enjoyable game throughout, not just because we won(though that always makes it better), but simply due to a tough game against a good side, banter throughout, in the right spirit and the Macc lads stopped for beers afterwards. Roll on Chester at home Sat 3rd Oct.
