It was the first game of the season for the Veterans, and the last so to have a 100% losing record seems a bit harsh after trying to play the free flowing rugby that Winnington players and supporters enjoy so much. Holmes Chapels tactics were clear from the off as the 9 and 10 kicked the ball as high, as hard, and as far into the corners as they could. Park did run the ball and employed a skill possibly not practiced at HC... called passing!
After 2 or 3 efforts centre Pete Higson went over the whitewash for a deserved 7-0 lead, Paul Hodgkinson
converting. HC were then awarded a penalty every few minutes for things that I'm sure the Referee understood, but none of the players. Anyway, there was no way HC were going to risk running with the ball so they slotted 4 pens to take the lead.
Man of the match Gareth Lloyd scored another as the players frustrations with the referee and HCs slowing down of the game threatened to boil over. Park continued to push with the ball in hand but, ironically, HC scored there only try after charging down a Park kick
Captain Dave Allcock
added "it was an excellent turn out on saturday, both players and supporters, and despite a 19 - 12 defeat i am claiming a moral victory.I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and got enough time on the pitch."
