Wprfc 28 Orrell 0
Park continue their winning run
Match Report by Dave Snasdell
Another win for WPRFC in poor wet conditions, Park started slow and a little nervy for the first 10 minutes. Orrell failed to capitalised with the pressure they put on Winnington and missed a penalty.
At the 15 minute mark after a long driving maul Dan Williams broke off the back and drove through two players to touch down. Flanagan missed the conversion.
Park began to take control of the game and 20 minutes in Orrell conceded a penalty for not being 10 yards back when a penalty was given and Flanagan got his eye in and scored the penalty.
Within 10 minutes after pressure from the Park pack in the scrums Orrell were penalized again and Flanagan scored his second penalty points.
Winnington looked good in the scrum and continued to take control of the game. 5 minutes before half time Orrell were again penalized for a late tackle on Jack Williams and Flanagan converted the penalty going into half time At 14 v 0.
The second half saw some replacements after 10 minutes Taylor going off for Joe Robbins and Gary Dykes on for Mike Hallworth. Park continued to dominate the scrums and mauls led by Underdown back to his former powerhouse performance after being out most of last season with a knee injury. His hard work paid off 15 minutes in to the second half with a 20 metre run on the wing evading two Orrell players to go over the line.
The try was converted by Flanagan who’s game is improving on a weekly basis.
25 minutes into the second half saw further replacement off Dave Cross coming on for Matt Treacy and Lee Allmark on for Chris Sheppard. The last quarter became a little stale with the referee stopping play for minor infringements in the scrums and mauls in wet slippery conditions.
This resulted in Underdown being yellow carded 34 minutes in the second half for allegedly not releasing the player on the floor and shortly after this was reciprocated with a Orrell player being shown the same yellow card.
Taylor came back on to form the front row with Alex Gendinning coming off and Ryan Williams and Lee Allmark grabbed 15 minutes of play.
With a few minutes to go Parks pack again dominating the mauls to set up Joe Robbins to go over the line for the last try of the game which was converted by Flanagan.
The score ended 28 v 0 which capped a heavy wet game for the players.
Coach Matt Farr commented “ We need to start the games better, we have been slow to start the past few weeks and this is an area with need to improve on. We play better in the dry conditions and need to work on this as the bad weather games will make or break us. We dominated the play particularly in the scrums but need to stay focused for the whole of the game. I am disappointed we did not get the extra try for the bonus points as these will make the difference later in the season. Overall I think the whole squad played well we are starting to get a little strength in the squad and players having to work for their positions which is healthy for the team.”
