Winnington Park 38 Leigh 15
Park play some great rugby against a strong Leigh team
Match report by Dave Snasdell
This was a great day for rugby with a dry pitch and sunny weather to go with it for the last game in September. Park started well with the pack taking control in the scrums to build a solid platform for the backs to play some open rugby.
The first try came after fifteen minutes when Jack Williams playing full back rather than is normal position of scrum half did a darting run through the Leigh defence to pass out to Chris Twigg to go over the line. The try was converted by Cameron Flannagan. The lead was reduced within minutes after a Park player was judged to be tackling a player off his feet and Leigh taking the penalty kick.
Both teams had some great defence work with both sets of backs entertaining the crowd with flowing rugby.
Leigh were penalised for being offside and Cameron Flanagan kicked over a further three points.
Park continued to apply pressure when Jack Williams went on a another dazzling run weaving through the Leigh defence supported by the Park pack passed onto Shaun Underdown to drive over the Leigh line in the corner. The conversion was missed.
With minutes to go for half time Leigh were again penalised for persistent offside and had a player sin binned. Cameron Flanagan stacked up the points with another penalty kick. Complacency set in just before the half time whistle with some sloppy tackling allowed Leigh a try but failed to convert the kick.
The crowd were excited for the second half as both teams were up for playing open rugby.
Coach Matt Farr made some changes bringing on Lee Allmark for Ryan Williams and Gary Dkyes who had another great game on for powerhouse Harry Stubbs.
Within minutes Stubbs was on the score sheet with a great move from Jack Williams once again supported by Mike Hallworth who had another impressive game in the second row popped the ball up for Stubbs to drive over the line. The kick was converted by Flanagan.
Alex Glendinning came off for Gary Dykes to come back on.
Park lost concentration and Leigh capitalised on this with sustained pressure in a maul broke off to score and convert the kick.
Again with poor discipline by Leigh they where penalised for pulling Matt Cross into the scrum giving Cameron Flanagan an easy kick under the post for a further three points. Leigh continued with poor discipline and Park were awarded another penalty for tackling off the ball in which Cameron Flanagan added a further three points to the score line.
With five minutes to go coach Farr made a further change bringing on Jimmy Moran who must have thought it was his birthday. A lovely timed kick through the Leigh defence by Jack Williams with luck on is side the ball bounced in his favour to run onto and dive over the line to give Park bonus points for four tries. Again the golden boot of Cameron Flanagan converted the kick to end a great afternoon of rugby with a impressive score of 38 to 15 to the home side.
Coach Farr afterwards said, "We played some great running rugby and scored some nice tries with all the team working for each other. We still have to work on our game and still making to many mistakes if we are to progress in this league. Some great individual play today by Jack Williams playing out of position but shows he has the skills and ability to play anywhere in the backs."
