Lymmbering up nicely

Lymm u15s 26:5 WPRFC u15s

In a good, strong display, the WPRFC team more than held its own against the self-advertised biggest and strongest pack in the county. The final score very much belied a thrilling game in which Park gave as good as it got. Were it not for two Lymm tries as results of temporary lapses of concentration, the game's scoreline would have been significantly tighter.

Lymm scored within seconds of the starting whistle, leading to Winnington taking the game into the opposition's 22 more-or-less immediately. An MJ long-range run and DanM's strong hard yards and tackles led to a long period of pressure.

Even after Lymm scored a second, no quarter was given. Given the strength of Lymm's forwards, Park chose to take the ball through the middle again and again. This strategy was rewarded when WillG got to put down the ball for a score after seven continuous phases of play around the breakdown area.

In the second half, the experimentation with WPRFC positions continued, allowing many of the team members to feel out new roles for themselves. Despite two more Lymm scores, Park came close on numerous occasions as its collective will never seemed to slacken.

WillG was superb in both runs and tackles. Adam had a good and brave game, once putting in a stonking try-saving tackle on the opposition's winger who was virtually clear and free. Matty had an astonishing drive near the dugout to change momentum at a critical time.

Without being able to mention everyone, the forwards had a very good game. The backs also supported strongly. Defence was very strong, frustrating Lymm constantly.

What to improve? Linking up the backs with the forwards, I guess. There were times when the overlap on the wing was 4:2 or 4:1. Quick ball out could have capitalised on the possession of space either in terms of yardage or a score. It's understandable that today the team's main focus was on neutralising Lymm's forwards, trying to deny them space, rather than making space.

This was a very good, synchronised and wilful performance. More, please.

Scorer: WillG (x1 try)
