Shoot-out at the AK Corral
Intense drama, twists and turns as Park u14s miss out in a tightly-fought game (AK 24:19 WPRFC)
In a tough game where the odds seemed to be stacked against the team, the players can hold up their heads high, having staged a come-back to only narrowly miss out in the end.
After a slow start in the first ten minutes, Winnington dominated the last ten minutes. ...and could have gone on to win had a last third been played.
Altrincham went ahead with two early tries and were 19:7 ahead at half time. WPFRC, though, ground out a 5:12 in the second half against a talented AK side, and could have gone further as they had momentum with them.
Matt who ran in another two tries, worked together well in the centre with Charlie, who very narrowly missed out on a try a yard from the line. Ollie's lighting run-in for his try wonderfully surprised AK. Our 9 and 10 pairing is beginning to click, with LewisG's quick decision-making after receiving the ball helping the team to move the ball quickly and effectively. Tom had a third great game in a row, his most memorable move being the successful chase-down of a kick, creating chaos in the opposition. Liam was again fearless on the wing against much bigger boys. Alex and Adam both ran and tackled for many last-ditch efforts. Elliott had some superb catches on the run, turning play and allowing Park to attack quickly.
Fitness is beginning to show after three training sessions, including one intense aerobics session last Sunday (see photo).
The passion and commitment shown after a slow start bodes well for next week's away encounter against Stockport and for the rest of the season.
Scorers: Matt (x2 tries), Ollie (x1 try), Charlie (x2 conversions)
