Tough morning against tough teams
The scene was set, two pitches marked out on the first team pitch all teams present and our first game against Westpark.
This was a fast paced game right from the start, and Westpark were up in our faces with a strong defence, our rucking started well and after a couple of phases of play the ball was passed down the line, unfortunately at the next breakdown turn over ball by Westpark, some strong running and good handling skills they scored the first try of the game. KO received a good catch by Liam and after a strong run and a well organised ruck, we were on the attack and from left to right. Alvaro found himself on the wing and after a short powerful run our first try was scored. The game was level, we once again had possession of the ball and we were moving the ball well, but we need to run onto the ball with pace. Our next pass was too long and flat, interception try and West Park were ahead. The heads did not drop, Archie, Harrison, Lucas, Millsy, Jacko, Donnie, Ewan and Will were leading from the front with some strong running down the middle of the field to tie in the opposition, with some good strong fend offs. Then the ball was passed out wide, Harrison was isolated but ruck after ruck JJ M smashed the opposition out of the way and we continued to recycle the ball, then a darting run by Harrison to level the game.
WP 2 v Westpark 2 – full time.
The second game was against Ruthin - this team were the spitting image of ourselves, even the shirts were nearly identical! Ruthin were not a big physical side, but provided plenty of skills, including strong running and excellent ball handling. There were more kicking options in this game, which was good to see players trying different options. Our one up tackles let us down in the first few minutes and as a result Ruthin scored the first try. We received the KO, Lucas saw a gap and broke through, a certain try to us, then a stray pass as he was trying to move the ball away from the contact. Scrum down, ball against the head won, well done Park attacking again passing down the line. Archie tried a long pass but did not reach the hands of Joe Bland, two opportunities to score went begging. Our defence remained strong and turn over ball at the ruck, quick ball by Thomas to Alvaro and after a strong fend off scored, the game was level. Ruthin then opted to receive a KO, Liam produced a fine kick which dropped beautifully just short of their try line and after a good chase down by Harrison and Thomas tackle made and after a counter ruck turn over ball 5 meters out, once again fantastic hands down the line Lucas to score the winning try.
WP 2 v Ruthin 1 – full time.
Our final game was against Sandbach who are another big team with two or three immensely big and strong players that on occasions needed 5 to 6 players to put down. The disappointing element of this game was we did not play to our strengths by moving the ball out wide to move Sandbach around the field, and instead we wrongly decided to try and take them on physically which was not the right approach. We were also now losing players to injury after another high intense morning, Archie - knee, Liam - arm, Ewan - head Injury, eventually Sandbach scored in ‘Fergie extra time’ to win.
WP 0 v 1 Sandbach.
Another thoroughly enjoyable morning of rugby the team spirit remains strong and our style of play is improving all the time, plenty to work on but overall a brilliant performance.
Our MoM was awarded to Jacko after a fine rugby performance all morning both in attack and defence so well done.
Also I want to thank our sponsors for our new shirts Chris/Kate Naylor, Phil/Rose Rowland, James/Andrea Neill and Sandy Rees - we appreciate your continued support with this.
