First game we were still asleep.. 2nd game we woke up!
This was an early start away at Lymm to ensure we all remembered and took part in the remembrance Sunday service.
We played 2 x 25minute halves against a streamed Lymm team, who after speaking with their coaches did this to ensure we had a competitive game and this is exactly what we got.
The first half we once again were not quick enough out of the blocks. Lymm were quick and aggressive at the breakdown and our first try was conceded within the first four minutes. Then eagle eyed Chris Naylor identified that Lymm were playing with 14 players on the field, very well spotted! Once the two teams were back to even numbers, we slowly started to get into the game, but our line speed in both attack and defence needed to be quicker, and after passing the ball well, we were not running onto the ball and ended up running out of space. This resulted in a flat pass by WP and Lymm intercepted this to score try number two. WP then came to life, the rucks were strong and efficient and WP ended up camped on Lymm try line, we just couldn’t get over the try line. Lymm cleared their lines with a big long kick, Thomas J playing full back took the ball well, into contact, ruck ball, penalty Lymm offside. Kick into touch by Joe WP attack again, drop ball in contact, turn over ball Lymm in possession. Then in defence, we came in from the side of a ruck, penalty Lymm in attack pass to one of their big strong runners and try number three. The whistle blew for half time.
The second half started by WP receiving a kick off, ruck formed and counter kick by Joe to relieve the early pressure, another good kick, but after a strong solo run by Lymm and two to three WP players not making the first up tackle around the legs the first try in the second half was conceded. The team led by Alvaro started to rally and after an excellent kick off we had possession of the ball in Lymms 22, good continued pressure by the forwards and after phase after phase the ball was shipped down the line with pace and urgency, led by Harrison pop pass to Thomas J who opened up his legs to score WP first try in the corner, well done game on!!
Then WP in possession after a brilliant counter ruck led by Tom, Lymm offside, penalty to WP, quick tap by Will to Joe to score try number 2. Lymm were now frustrated as they were now not getting their own way. WP were finishing strongly, fitness leading the way, then as always Lucas on the lookout and interception pass caught and taken try time, that’s what we all thought, but unfortunately not given as the decision was Lucas was offside, a real shame as he deserved this try after another strong performance.
The final score of the morning – Lymm 5 – WP 2.
- Tries scored by Thomas J and Joe R.
There were some strong performances in the team, including Tresor who is now finding his feet in the team, but in order to be competitive we need all twelve players to be in the game. Tthe opposition clearly know the ability of WP and hence they put out their strongest players. We therefore have to step our game up week in week out.
Alvaro, Thomas J, Harrison, Lucas, Will all had good performances but our stand out player was Millsy as he was devastating in the ruck and stole much of Lymms ball in this area - So well done Millsy.
We continue to have injuries, Liam and Donnie are recovering so should be back this week and Archie is out for a week, this just shows how competitive the game has become.
