Mud mud glorious mud
Sales of ' Vanish' will be high in mid Cheshire area but it was worth it - overall all played very well but still plenty to work on with the new rules
Team 1 : Joe, Lucas, Will, Joe BM, Tom N, Max, Harvey R, JJ Mc, Harry P, Rhys & Jacko
Game 1 - The much anticipated first home game of the season was against a tough, organised team from Caldy. We started on the front foot and after the first few plays inside Caldys half Joe R went in through a hole in the opposition defence for the first score. This was quickly followed up by the same scorer in again after brushing off 2 or 3 tacklers on the way to the line. At this point complacency set in, as from the kick off we were not switched on, tackles were missed as Caldy scored a long range try. Lessons to be learned, focus at all times!
In the next play, good rugby from WP resulted in a great attacking move down the left, with Tom charging for the line only to be bundled into touch just short of the line by excellent cover defence from Caldy. A turnover was achieved soon after and this time Tom was not be be denied as he crashed over taking 3 defenders with him. More of this please big Tom. Half time 3-1.
At the start of the second half we were dominate again, with the bank of WP supporters struggling to follow the action at the far side of the pitch, as we were camped just short of their try line. Lucas went close, as did HP, and finally JJ Mc grounded the ball over the line. It was not long before we were again close to scoring, and after sustained pressure Max strolled in to touch down.
Joe BM finished off another good move by Park with some elusive running. This was not the end of the scoring as once again we were sleeping from the kick off and Caldy ran through half hearted tackling to score their second try. Final score 6-2.
Game 2 - This time we were up against Tarleton, who are a team from near Preston. They had already been well beaten by our other team, so it was no surprise when the tries started to flow, a ball steal by Joe R, pass to Lucas, try 1. Try 2, dummy from Joe R over he went. Number 3 went to Max, with a trademark run from about 15m out, leaving defenders in his wake. Try 4 went to Joe BM, with a great run from inside his own half. Max finished off the scoring in the first half, darting in at the corner after Tarleton were penalised for handing off. Half time 5-0 with the opposition not getting a sniff of our line.
The second half carried on where the first half finished, and it was apparent that more tries would be scored. Joe BM with another good run from deep started things off, followed by scrum half Will scampering over from the half way line. Harry went close only to be tackled into touch, after a strong run, and then Max scored his third try of the game, does that mean he can take the match ball home ??? We were, at the point totally dominant, evidence if you needed it that a scrum was won against the head, ( yes we can do this, this year) and Joe R was in. Harry was the next to score after a super run from Harvey. Lucas wrapped up the scoring on the last play to make the final score 11- 0.
Overall, many positives to take away from the morning, strong running from Joe BM and Max the highlight. Teamwork is key, and its becoming more evident as we start to see players working for each other more, supporting more and everyone doing their bit.
There's plenty to work on, and we all need to get up to speed with the rule changes, but smiles at the end showed what this is all about.
Team 2: Archie, Scarlett, Thomas C, JJP, Bobby, Isaac, Millsy, Ewan, Thomas J, Harrison. Alvaro
Game 1 vs Tarleton - At first we were making simple mistakes as we were getting into the game, then with great teamwork a pass from Alvaro to Harrison to score our first try and then we then began to dominate the game. A kick off from Talerton into hands of Harrison who charged forward and passed to Alvaro to push through many of their players to score no 2. With great defence and a lovely run by Isaac to score no 3 and again Harrison to Alvaro to score no 4. A good catch from Archie from kick off and run by Isaac, then a great decision by Harrison to kick down to our try line but an unlucky run by Alvaro was pushed out of touch so close. Half time. Coach wanted to see less greedy play and more passing of the ball. Rucking was working well and the team needed to talk and wanted to hear Tiger Ball.
Second half Park were moving down the line well and keeping depth. Isaac scored again. Then Tarleton were getting through our defence almost scoring but then Harrison got back and a great kick. Thomas C was doing some great defending. Lovely side stepping from Isaac to score again. Bobby was playing at his best since he joined us but he was just unlucky a couple of times not to get to score but Archie finished off to score no 9. Tarleton did well to keep their heads high and did some lovely passing but Scarlett soon ruined that by ripping ball. Scarlett even made a great catch between her knees from a kick off ! Then it was JJ's turn to run with the ball to pass to Thomas J to score no 10, Then a excellent run by Archie and pass to JJ to score no 11 which boosted his confidence in top corner. A good off load , keeping depth and than a pass to Thomas C to make the final score 12/0.
In this game the feedback was it was good play and some great stuff.
JJP - was his best game but keep lively, keep focused
Millsey needs to look where passing - keep two hands on the ball
Bobby keep hold of ball
Isaac/Ewan - great rucking and kept low
But team still keep too narrow and not making full use of of width of pitch
Harrison/Archie some lovely hands from kick off.
Game 2 vs Caldy - a stronger team and this started by pushing Thomas C out of touch, followed by a kick off then a knock on Caldy scrum. Again we were not passing but Alvaro did score. A kick by Caldy retrieved back by Park. Millsy then scored a lovely try. Caldy came back by pushing through our defence and we were making some missed tackles. Scarlett then made a strong tackle followed by Archie who then did a kick off, Caldy kicked back doing some lovely passing down the line then they scored in top corner into space. Halftime 2vs 1.
Team were told to share workload and everyone to put first tackles in. We needed Thomas J to find space and Thomas C ( our stronger fittest runner) to run harder. Second half: Caldy was holding us up and then Archie didnt manage to pass in time so Caldy ball then loss of ball when went to ground. Great play by both teams and another lovely run by Isaac from halfway, a pass to Bobby who again didn't quite score, then a pass to Harrison who bobbed and weaved through to score no 3. Thomas J & Harrison tackling well and pushing opposition out of touch but then we did the same to them. Final score 3/1
Overall this team played very well and some of the kick off & receiving were excellent.
We didnt do any knock-ons. Coach said it was a pleasure to ref and all played very well so no MOM as all deserved it!
