Winnington Park vs Caldy 9.12.18

Match report by Kerry Brown

It was a fresh and a rather windy morning for the boys to take on Caldy away. With a little help from our boys, Caldy were able to field two teams.

Toby and Jim's team were William, Ethan, Matty E, Liam, Thomas, Caleb, Sam B, Ed, Mikey and Max. The boys won their first match 4-3 but were beaten in match 2 5-2. Well done to Max and William in match 1 who played really well for the opposition including a try from Max. There was some great passes which resulted in try 1 scored by Liam who picked up another later in the match one whilst Sam B put in some superb tackling throughout the match and scored the final try after Caldy put the ball down short of the try line. Caleb did great after picking up an injury but came back on to make a great tackle. There was some lovely running by Matty E and he and Ethan put in some good tackles. The boy bunched up in match 2 when attacking and defending which allowed Caldy to break through and win the game but the boys still had some good moments with Mikey putting the opposition into touch superbly and Sam B had a great try saving tackle. The boys all played really well and showed some great running, rucking and support.

Gav, Martin, Paul and Matt's team were Rory, Frankie, Sam M, Oscar, Ben, Matty R, Josh, Ollie and Ryan. The team played well in match 1 winning 4-3 with Frankie (must run with two hands on the ball!) getting a hat trick and Ben H running in a superb run to pick up the final try. Match 2 finished 5-1 after some great teamwork and effort by all the boys. Well done to Oscar and Ollie who played for the opposition with Oscar having a superb tackle fest against his Winnington team-mates. There were great tries and the first was a perfect example of a training session with Paul. Frankie went in with the tackle and presented the ball, Josh was there to ruck over, Rory picked up and put in a lovely pass to Sam M for him to run and score! There was some good movement but the boys need to press more and pressure the opposition. There was some great defensive play and Josh did a great try saving rip. Good tries were made by Frankie, Ben and Matty R with the final one coming in from Rory: passed at the start of play and straight running to the try line. Overall, some great play and improved communications.

After some tough matches, Caldy, fielded six players to take part in a final match. Sam M, Oscar, Josh, Frankie, Matty E and Liam took them on whilst the rest of the boys held their own match. The boys all played with some real passion and drive winning 5-0. There was some great play and they all supported each other putting a lot of pressure on the Caldy team not letting them get any flow or break through the defence line. Great team play with the tries from Sam M(2), Matty E, Frankie and Josh.
