WPRFC Under 9's v Northwich
Forget yesterday’s minor skirmish at Goodison Park. Burrows Hill was the scene of Sunday’s major derby which saw the U9’s retain bragging rights.
WPRFC “BLUES” 8 – 7 NORTHWICH
WPRFC: Alfie, Cameron, Archie, Joe, Scott, Toby, Owain, John, Ollie, Callum
WP are able to field a full team plus rolling substitutes. Northwich kick off and immediate good tackling from the start forces a turn over but WP are forced into touch. WP regain possession from which Toby scores on the crash ball. WP surrender possession after being offside in the ruck and Northwich score after missed tackles. Alfie immediately scores with a fine solo effort but Northwich level when one of their players is again able to break through without being brought down. A good break from Toby sees Alfie, in close support, cross the line with ease. Northwich again run strongly and directly at the WP line and missed tackles see them score. Toby scores to give WP the lead while a crunching tackle from Scott keeps the visitors at bay and secures the half-time lead. Alfie scores after a scrappy start but Northwich score twice using their most successful tactic, despite John’s best efforts, before Alfie again scores with a solo run through the middle. Alfie brings down Northwich’s star player with a crunching tackle, inspiring the rest of the team to up their game as Joe and Ollie stop the visitors in their tracks. Alfie runs the full length of the pitch to score after a crunching tackle from Callum forces the ball loose. Northwich again score to tie the match but with the clock ticking down Alfie scores his sixth try to secure the win for the home team.
WPRFC “WHITES” 6 – 0 NORTHWICH
WPRFC: James, AJ, Dan, Lewis G, Ben, Alastair, Alex, Aidan, Elliot, Toby, Callum
WP are able to field a full team but Callum & Toby are drafted in as subs. AJ starts the match in determined mood, stripping the ball from the opposition and launches into a mazy run to score in the corner. Northwich are forced into touch and the home team embark on a good passage of play, recycling the ball well but are forced into touch. Alastair wins possession with some tenacious mauling while good solid defence stops the visitors, even though they are persistent and show determination and strength in attack. Good rucking allows James to drive through but is held up but the ball is recycled, allowing scrum half Lewis G to score. WP start the second half with gusto, a cracking break from Lewis G and good support from Dan is held up just short but good recycling and great hands allows AJ to score. Dan takes a hard tackle but stoically picks himself up and carries on, executing a great tackle to force a turnover from which Lewis G scores. Northwich fluff a lineout allowing Lewis to score his third. A crunching tackle from Ben in true “No Fear” style stops a determined charge by a committed Northwich team. Alex breaks through but is unable to score as he’s forced into touch. Aidan then nails the opposition to force a turnover which sees excellent ball retention, recycling and passing from everyone to put James over to secure a resounding win.
