Brilliant "Blues" bag victory Vase!!!
After a slow start the "Blues" came good while the "Whites" were straight out of the blocks and into the Cup proper.
Winnington Park Under 9 “Blues” team won the Cheshire Vase at Sunday’s Cheshire Cup tournament held at Chester RUFC. Twenty nine teams took part and the standard was extremely high. After a slow start in the group stages, WP “Blues” overcame Marple 2-1 in a tense Cheshire Vase final with Elliot Simcock scoring both tries. Winington Park held on with dogged determination and robust tackling to deny a committed Marple team. Coach Hugh Carmichael said, “I’m enormously proud of my team. Every single one contributed something. They started slowly but kept their heads up, maintained their enthusiasm and came through when it was needed. It was a great advert for all that is good about the team sport that is rugby union”.
Winnington Park Under 9’s “Whites” also had a good day. Unbeaten in their group after two wins and a draw, they played some inspiring rugby, often against much bigger players and learned a great deal from their experience. Unfortunately they were beaten in the Quarter Final of the prestigious Cheshire Cup by Sandbach who became the beaten finalists by the ever-resourceful Lymm RUFC team.
Head Coach Steve Riddlestone was delighted with the day’s events. “Unlike some teams, we at Winnington Park choose to field two teams of equal abilities in order to give the boys a real taste of competition. It’s great to see boys excel when faced with often bigger and better players so they need to pull together and play as a team. I’m immensely proud of them all and it’s a great reward for all the hard work put in by the boys and coaching staff throughout the season.”
