Dog Fouling Forces Club to Ban Dogs

Dog Fouling Forces Club to Ban Dogs image

Because of the increasing instances of dog walkers allowing their dog to foul the pitches a total ban has been introduced.

The Executive Committee has decided to introduce a total ban on dogs at the Club. This is because of the ridiculous amounts of dog fouling that has been going on over recent months. Much of this, incredibly, has been done on the rugby pitches where players of all ages play regularly. We now consider this to be a risk to the health and safety of our members and visitors to our club. This is not a park but a sports club and the walking and letting loose of dogs on all fields and inside the clubhouse must now stop. We regret that sensible dog owners are being punished but we as a committee have a responsibility to our members and consider our action in this case to be totally justified.

Could not agree more about the dog fouling problem on the fields and paths. However as regular dog walkers on the path and back field ( we have two greyhounds), the committee we feel are missing the fact that it is not the members that are causing the problem, but members of the public who use the pitches as a park in the week. Steve has regularly challenged people using the field who are non-members, to which some have taken great offence and been quite aggressive. One particular man seems to think it is council owned and has every right to use it! Frustratingly Steve has mentioned this several times to members of the committee about making the fields entrances secure, especially on the back field in the far corner by the pond were access is gained. Of course as members we will abide by the rules, but with no members there to challenge these people the problem will get worse not better.

Steve, all valid points and thanks for the reply. I agree we need to secure all areas and we are investigating this. As you say the monitoring of it is virtually impossible without CCTV everywhere. We are placing notices at these points making it quite clear that this must not go on and if we catch anyone doing it we will take it further as a club. we cant have a 100% foolproof situation but its the agrument that "just beacuse you cant do everything doesnt mean you can do something has prompted us to do this. I can also give you evidence of members dogs fouling the pitches from information given to the Wirral Club committee. I also suggest once again that this is not a public park but sports fields and we have a duty to our members first and foremost. Thanks for your understanding and support.

It is a sorry state of affairs when all dog owners are tarred with the same brush. Whilst I agree that dogs fouling the playing fields is unacceptable I cannot accept the fact that the committe is aware of so called 'members' allowing their dogs to foul and have not taken the appropriate action. The comittee need to act upon the information provided to them, and bring the culprits to task.

Let's face it everyone, dog owner or not, would agree with the dog fouling issue but I've got to say I agree with Steve and Gary's comments. I think you are on a hiding to nothing with this email as the only response you will get is from responsible dog owners who are the ones getting penalised - like us. Should there be a total ban or were any compromises considered? If dogs are banned for a month and the problem still persists there's your answer or even keeping your dog on a lead when on the pitches? Just a thought. As Sundays is a day for families at the club, not to have the dog there just does not seem right.

The committee is a democratically elected body that runs the club in what it sees as its best interests. Members are entitled their views, but is email the best route? i and other committee members are happy to discuss face to face or by phone. Please do. I am available any time. Personally, this is my last email on the matter as it can descend into a pointless series of mails that can then get personal. This is a sports club who plays its matches on sports fields. I take all the points made and like ant decent committee all decisions are open to review, amendment and consideration of members feelings. If this isnt acceptable there is an AGM where you can raise these issues (usually in May).
