Under 13s win fantastic game
Witham welcomed Canvey for a closely contested league match.
Witham kicked off in perfect conditions and were quick to harass the visitors. When Witham earned a scrum, it was the platform to open the scoring. Jimmy Dines passed to Owen James who beat his man before passing to Daniel Grey, who still had 2 opponents to beat before he could score. The Witham pack were working well and next to benefit was Maleli Hunter, taking a Charlie Williams turnover and running through the defence to double the lead. Canvey then had a spell of dominance and several half breaks got them close until they made the break to get on the scoresheet.the visitors were now running with confidence and when their winger got space to run, Witham couldn't catch him and the scores were level. With half time approaching, Canvey's big lad looked like he was going to drive through. However, Yammi disagreed and the head on tackle was good enough to dislodge the ball. Jack Hobden, stole the ball and passed to Owen, who's clearance kick was high enough to allow chasers to attack the defender. Maleli was first their and having taken the ball he looked off to give a 15-10 lead at the break.
Both sides were determined to take the win and Canvey came at Witham from the restart. But the first score was by Wiitham. Harvey Hobden had made a break but was halted, but Daniel was in support and once he had the ball, he was away to score his second try of the game. In loose play, Witham were finding each other well. When Olly dispossessed an opponent, his slick pass to Owen James gave the Witham Captain room to break clear and extend the lead. Canvey managed to pull back 2 tries to ensure the score stayed close but Owen managed another try to make it more comfortable as time ran out. Maleli scored his 3rd try of the game in the final minute and both sides knew the kick off would start the final play. Canvey showed great character as they received the kick off and attacked with vigour. Their approach was rewarded with a well taken try to finish the match.
Next Sunday, we welcome Billericay.
