U17 - Match Report vs Perrywood Sports 21.1.18
Withdean Remain In Pole Position As They Grab All 3 Points In Perrywood Clash
The first of our three, highly anticipated season defining home games saw Perrywood Sports make the journey south for a cold, wet and windy 10 o clock kick off.
The game was of high importance to both sides, both sides with ambitions to win the league couldn't afford to lose. Withdean started on the front foot and had the early dominance of the game. We created a few chances to go with it, the best of then coming to Fitzgerald who's shot just flashed wide.
We needed a goal to compliment our good start. Perrywood hardly entered our half, we were well on top and the goal was coming. The Perrywood keeper made a rash challenge in the box resulting in a penalty to Withdean. Up steps Guille to get the goal we deserved. 1-0. Long way to go.
This seemed to wake Perrywood up and they started to play. They had a good opportunity late in the first half but managed to hit wide, much to the relief of anyone involved with the reds. We got to the break 1-0 up.
The next goal of the game was vital, both teams were aware of this. Perrywood came out strong, they weren't willing to be beaten. However slightly against the run of play at the time, Bendu slots a ball into the path of Rowley who was breaking from midfield, he takes a good first touch and slides home with the second. A well worked goal and we now gave ourselves a great chance of winning this game.
The Crawley based team had not given up, they were determined to keep a grip on the game and consequently the league title. They found themselves in behind our back four, something they hadn't managed many times, and a bit of sloppy defending enabled the striker to get the shot off, it slipped under Knight and in the back of the net. 2-1, game on now.
Their tails were up, the game was getting tense and Withdean soon found themselves down to ten men. Minutes later the same striker found himself In a similar position, however our defenders were adamant not to let him get the shot off this time, came sliding in and the ref blew up for a suspicious penalty which they converted. The odds swang in Perrywoods favour.
At this point we had to dig in and ride the storm, we battled, we weren't going to let this slip. Bartlett received the ball on the left, he chips it forward towards Goodsell who finished well with his left foot. Scenes amongst the players as they had put so much into it.
Perrywood created a chance soon after which produced a fine save from Knight as he dives down to his right to keep us ahead.
The final ten minutes was just a pure test of resilience and fitness. We passed the test and bagged the points. Absoloute class from all.
It was a great win lads, but we have to go again next week or it means very little. The same effort and discipline. Even down to turning up early and getting warmed up properly. It all makes a difference.
Man of the match: They were a few contenders today, you were all immense. One player sticks out, as he has all season so far, his work rate and quality on the ball is irreplaceable. Ollie Guille top class again.
