U17 vs Polegate Grasshoppers - Match Report
Withdean's Unbeaten Home Run Ends In Dramatic Title Clash
The last of the 'big three' saw Polgate head east for a morning kick off at Stanley Deason.
Three points for Withdean would have almost secured the title and would definitely eliminate Polgate from lifting it at the end of the season.
The pressure was on for both sides, Polgate won the important coin toss which resulted in them choosing to kick in to the pressing wind first half.
It was vital we took a lead into half time as with Polgates ability on the ball and the wind behind them, we knew we'd be in for a tough second half.
We managed to get an early lead as Goodsell again gets another important goal to put us 1-0 up. Rowley added to this soon after to give us a lead of 2 after 15 minutes. We were in control and we're delighted with our start.
Polgate grew into the game and just before the break they pulled one back after a free kick wasn't dealt with and was bundled in to our net. 2-1. Half time.
The game changed when we swapped ends, Polgate were the team on top for large periods and pressured our goal. Knight kept in front for as long as he could with some good saves before Polgate managed to level, a goal that was coming.
We could have quite easily crumbled at this point but we didn't, we hit them straight back with a great Lob from Goodsell to put us back into the lead. 3-2.
Polgate saw the title slipping away and they didn't like it, they upped the tempo and scored 3 goals on fairly quick succession. We were struggling with the wind, and struggling to contain the opposition.
The introduction of O'Neil late on gave us a glimmer of hope as he pulls one back with 5 to go. A draw would have been a decent result, but it wasn't to be. We were beaten fair and square and by a good side. They just had a bit too much for us, there were periods where we just didn't compete enough, we wasn't strong enough in our tackles and not winning our headers in the midfield.
However, it's one game, it's done, it's in the past. We move on, we're still top of the league and still in a great position to win this league. We've got a little break now to re-coup after a run of tough games.
Man of the Match: he helped us stay in the game for as long as possible today producing some great saves. Fine kicking into a strong wind and a quote from the Polgate manager calling him the best keeper in the league isn't something I would disagree with. Well done Danny ??
