U17 vs Southwick Rangers - match report
Withdean Move 6 Points Clear As Southwick Dismantled At Stanley Deason
Today's lunchtime kick off saw us entertain our Brighton based rival Southwick. 1st vs 2nd, all to play for.
We was underway and took the game to Southwick from the off, we were on the front foot. We looked full of energy and creativeness, much like the first half of the week before against Perrywood.
The opener came after 20 minutes as Goodsell got on the end of what is becoming a trademark Rowley long through-in. A goal we deserved and a goal to settle us down and get into a rhythm of football.
It was important for us to keep playing at the high tempo and not let Southwick into the game as we know from the previous game and their position in the table that they were a strong side.
Knight, having very little to do in the opening half an hour was called into action and provided a good strong right hand down at his near post to keep us infron, Southwicks 1 and only shot on target in the first half.
We went into the break 3-0 up. Goodsell grabbed himself another as he travelled with the ball down the left, cut inside and finished well. Moments later, a precise goal kick from Knight saw him pick out Fitzgerald who slides Goodsell in down the right hand side, he heads for the byline and pulls it back for Bendu who smashes the ball with intent into the back of the net. Perhaps his new boots are his shooting boots he's been missing so far this season. A great team goal and a class first half performance.
The visitors didn't lay down in the second half, they saw there hopes of the league title getting away and they were giving up with out a fight. A tight and cagey opening 20 minutes saw them grow into the game, they had the wind and a goal would have pushed them on for a possible comeback. We defended brilliantly, we was compact and organised. Strong and decisive. Led by our skipper Bourne who keeps the team grounded and focused on getting the points.
The next goal was vital and we made sure we got it. A free kick taking by Guille caused problems for the keeper as he only managed to parry it into Rowley who didn't need a second invitation. A calm finish to put us 4-0 up with ten to go.
Goodsell bagged yet another hat trick and his 30th league goal of the campaign with a late goal for us to win 5-0.
A proper performance, no doubt from the start who was the better side.
Like I said last week, it all means very little if we don't do it all again on Sunday, a win at home against Polgate will not see us have the league but we would only need one point from Our remaining two games to wrap it up. Its in our hands, let's do it!
Man of the Match - a player who has slotted into the team like he's been there for years, the missing piece of our puzzle. Today's performance see him boss our midfield, win every header and tackle and pushes the team on when we need it. To add to the that, he got himself a goal and an assist. Byron Rowley great game ??
