Forest Row Away (Cup) - Match Report
Withdean Through To Quarter Final Of League Cup After Impressive Win At Forest Row
We were back in action this morning as we started the defence of the league cup which we won last season. Away to Forest Row had potential to be tough for us as we didn’t know anything about them and we had quite a journey to get there.
It was clear in the opening stages who was the better team, as we were on the front foot taking the game to Forest Row and they showed little quality when they got on the ball. This meant nothing though, as a goal for them would have gave them something to hold onto. It was vital we took the lead.
We were playing great football but struggled to create any clear chances early on. O’Neil had the best of them which flashed over the bar from 12 yards.
We kept pushing and pushing, Row were determined to keep us out and were doing a good job of it until Faulkner, making his full debut received a ball played from O’Neil just inside the box. Faulkner only need two touches, one to control it and one to finish. The goal and the lead we fully deserved.
Soon after, Faulkner took a free kick far out on the left. The keeper was in trouble as the ball was swinging towards the back post, he managed to get something on before Hyde got his head to the rebound which the keeper also saved but then it fell kindly to O’Neil who finished into the empty net. 2-0 at the break and a long way back for Forest Row.
We took total control of the game in the second half. The midfield trio of Guille, Dilloway and Rowley were unplayable. Each winning the ball back, creating chances and just dominating the game. The ball was being zipped around and Forest Row were being carved open with ease at times. We looked dangerous every time we went forward.
We received a free kick in the centre circle midway through the second half, Rowley saw an early ball through to H, who took in his stride and finished well across the keeper to kill the game.
Guille also got himself on the scoresheet as he netted his 3rd of the season in as many games as Harrison picked the ball up in the middle and slid a ball in Guille who was never in doubt to put us 4 in front.
On another day it could have been 6 or 7, Fitzgerald came close with an effort from range that rattled the bar.
A proper performance that. At times we played the best football we ever have. It wasn’t an easy game, we just carried on playing and scoring goals.
Into the quarter finals now against Horsham. Let’s keep pushing on. Perfect start to the season I couldn’t be more pleased.
Man of the Match: not only for his performance today, but also for his performance last week at Horsham. He didn’t kick a ball, he came out in the rain, ran the line first half but didn’t manage to get on. However he didn’t have one complaint. Yet today he gets his opportunity upfront, he scores one and assists one. Put in a great shift for the team and comes off after an hour with his head held high. Well done Joe proper team player ??
