Devonport Services Fishermans Cup
Withy U16s do double over Devonport Services
This week Withycombe took on Devonport Services at home in a very entertaining match in the Fishermans Cup.
An outstanding Withy performance and individual moments of brilliance were on display throughout, but forward Ollie Cowley's efforts were singled out by the referee, and winger Thomas Crowl in only his third appearance had a great game.
Throughout the game the tight Withy defence contained all but one attack and the forwards brilliantly penetrated the defensive line over and over again until finally they broke the early deadlock with an attack down the right from a scrum. The ball was fed out by Jo Blyth to Jason Farrant who started a run forward. Farrant put in a grubber kick to the try line surprising the Devonport defence. He chased the ball and grounded it to give the first points to Withycombe.
The try was followed up with great attacking play down the left wing by Thomas Croal. Devonport halted the initial attack and the ball was sent right at the breakdown. On the right wing Aaron Lee collected the ball and powered forward to cross the line and score under the posts. Josh Saunders converted.
The next try came quickly. After great work by the forwards, line breaks from Harry Cartwright and Max Dix began passing moves that penetrated the Devonport 22. The ball was turned over, and as Devonport kicked to clear on their try line, the ball was charged down by Farrant who chased the rebound and scored his second. Again Saunders was on target to bring the score to 19-0.
As the first half was drawing to a close, Devonport made two powerful attacks releasing runners that looked certain to score until on both occasions captain Luke Davis took down the attackers making two brave try saving tackles.
In the second half Devonport started with renewed purpose causing Withycombe to defend hard from the kick off. However, Ollie Cowlie crucially stopped a promising Devonport attack starting a counter attack that looked sure to end up in a try when Josh Arbury broke free with one of his powerful runs. Sprinting forward he released the ball in a move that went deep in to the Devonport half until the last pass went too high for Croal to collect in a superb supporting run down the wing.
The ball stayed in Devonport control for a long period of time. They pressed Withycombe back inside their own 22, but the Withycombe defence contained the onslaught brilliantly until an attack down the right broke the Withy line and Devonport scored a well deserved try.
Withycombe were quick to respond from the restart. From a turn over, a brilliant passing move released Oscar Moyles who made a dive across the line to score. Again Saunders was on target.
Less than 2 minutes later, the Withy forwards pressed their attack using speed and power down the right side of the park moving the ball well between themselves. As the ball neared the Devonport 22, the Neath Rodger twins straitened the attack with Ollie Cowley in support until finally Max Dix shot forward and grounded the ball to score.
With Devonport on the ropes, Withycombe started to take control. As they attacked Ben Dawson broke free and sprinted from half way to score. Saunders was kicking well and again stepped up to bring the score to 38-7. As the game was drawing to an end, Devonport attacked hard. But even with the game secured, in a show of total commitment, the Withycombe team defended repeated attacks along the length of their try line. The whole team effort was at a 100% to stay tight and keep resisting the onslaught. The game eventually ended after a gruelling final 10 minutes, but was a brilliant win for Withys.
