Ivybridge given a surprise
Great team performance
Withy, took on Ivybridge this week in a friendly.
Ivybridge, beaten only once this season were immediately put under pressure by the Withy attack. Within 5 minutes an early run down the left side of the field by Ivybridge was decisively stopped as the runner was tackled in to touch by Harry Cartirght. The Withycombe line out was well taken by Archie Symons who passed a quick ball to Joe Blyth. Blyth passed to fly half Jason Farrant who fed Josh Arbury who ran a hard line braking the defensive line to off load to Luke Davis who ran the ball to the Ivybridge 22 before passing to Ben Dawson who completed the move for an early first try. Neatly converted by Aaron Lee, Withys were 7-0 up in under 5 minutes.
A second try quickly followed from a slick passing attack from Withys as the ball went quickly down a line of 6 players. Starting with a great run by Cameron Bennett who played a huge part in attack and defence throughout the game, he off loaded in contact and started a move that ended with Luke Davis. Seeing a gap, Davis tore through the defence for the final 10 yards to score. Again converted by Lee, the score was now 14-0. Ivybridge resilience paid off despite good defensive play by Josh Farr and the forwards with the next 3 trys going Ivybridge's way putting the visitors in to the lead. Some great Withycombe defending prevented the next attack on the Withy try line although a fourth was scored by Ivybridge in an evenly contested period to take the score to 26-19 at half time.
Withycombe kicked the restart and pressed hard but the next try went again to Ivybridge. With the score now at 33-19, Withys needed to reassert themselves to close the score. Eventually the chance came as a penalty against Ivybridge on their 22 was taken powerfully in to contact by Harry Neath Rogers who of-loaded to Josh Saunders. Saunders swerved through the defence and passed to Max Dix to finish a powerful and fast attack by scoring.
Ivybridge came back to score again but the Withy attack continued to test the visitors defence. Several runs pressed the Ivybridge defence as Jake Lewis drove forward, and Tom Croal linking we'll with Jason Farrant, set up a 20 yard charge by Josh Arbury to keep the game alive. The good work was rewarded as the game drew to a close with a drive for the line again by Arbury to score. The try was converted by Josh Saunders to end a tough game at 38-31 to Ivybridge.
