Fishermans Cup Win Vs Brixham
Withy win bruising encounter
Brixham played hosts to Withys u16s in this weeks match in the Fishermans Cup. Brixham fielded a formidably strong side with big forwards who presented stiff opposition, but Withycombe were up for the challenge in a huge, bruising encounter between the opposing forwards producing some great rugby.
Another excellent team effort got underway as Farrant started proceedings with a kick deep in to the Brixham 22. They struggled to deal with the attacking Withy line who quickly closed Brixham down, pinning them within 10 metres of their try line.
A Withycombe line out got the ball moving wide to the left and some excellent runs straightened the attack. A ruck formed on the left side and a huge drive took the ball over the line for Josh Farr to touch down and give Withys the perfect start within 3 minutes.
The following fifteen minutes saw Brixham respond with determination. A turnover at a line out gave Brixham an attacking platform on the Withycombe 22, and a chip over the defensive line gave a Brixham winger a chance to break through to score the equaliser. The home team scored again soon after as pressure drove Withycombe back to defend their try line until an infringement rewarded Brixham with a penalty try.
The onslaught from Brixham resumed after the restart and as the ball went down the Brixham line, an intercepted ball reversed the attack as the ball was run forward by the Withycombe backs. A tackle inches from the Brixham try line saw the ball passed to Farrant who had run in close support and touched down for a great try equalling the score. Then the dependable boot of Oscar Moyles converted the try and Withys were back in front against the run of play.
With Withycombe back in front, they had the upper hand as the forwards gained territory and released Farr to cross the line for his well deserved second try. This was again converted by Moyles to take the score to 19-10 and ended the first half with Withycombe ahead.
Brixham started the second half strongly but Withys showed their resolve and absorbed the attacks. It wasn't long before Withycombe were able to push forward and again press toward the try line. Some strong rucking drove the Withy team forward and for the third time, Farr touched down securing the bonus point and extending the lead to 24-10.
Shortly after the restart, a huge run down the right wing by Withycombe gained ground and the ball was released for Farrant to power over the line and score his second. Farrant converted his own try to extend the lead to 31-10.
As the game seemed to be out of reach, Brixham scored a brilliant try as their number 2 received a ball on the run. As he broke free from the half way line, he continued to cross the line to score a well deserved try.
But in quick retaliation the big Withy number 5, Harry Neath Rogers scored from a scrum as he was released to extend the lead to 36-19.
Brixham were able to score once more in the last play of the game which ended up 36-24 to Withycombe making this another tremendous win taking the Withy boys ever closer to a place in the final next month.
