Spirited effort from the 2's
2's lose to table toppers Maidenhead
With Maidenheads 1’s performing well in South West Premier, playing their 2’s was always going to be hard task and this certainly was the case!
Witney kicked off and apart from one fluffed lineout that was the only touches of the ball we saw for the opening 20 minutes. The lads put in a gigantic defensive shift, Ben McPherson in particular had a monster first half. Ollie Roper
and physio Liam Jones
were also impressive, some how managing to contain their massive centre who display good footwork and contact skills all day! Despite a fine effort from the whole side we found ourselves 15 points down quite quickly.
Finally we had some ball and began working our way down the field, Charlie Bennett
(showing no signs of the 14 pints the night before) and Adam Fisk
both carrying well had got the backs on the front foot this resulted in a lineout 10 metres off the Maids try line. Following a great rolling maul from the pack Tom Gaffney
was able to dart over for a converted try! This showed what we were capable of once we had the ball.
A few minutes later, Jake Payne
turned the ball over from another promising Maidenhead attack in the 22, after beating the covering defence he chipped the ball through, Gaffers won the chase to dot down for another 7 pointer!
Minutes later Gaffney completed his 1st half hattrick with the try of the match. On our 22 new back rower Kevin Raqio
bust through the middle of a ruck and cantered away as the defence closed in on him he gave the perfect offload to the rampaging Charlie Bennett
. He carried it 20 metres before he was hauled down but provided the perfect off load to the young scrum half who out stripped the covering defence for another 7 points! What a turn around, from 15 nil down to leading 21-15 at half time. In truth, the break came at the wrong time for us as Maidenhead were on the rack. The breather allowed them to regather themselves and they put in a fine second half performance scoring 4 unanswered try’s.
There was some fine performance by all involved, special mentions go to Adam Fisk
, carrying the ball with pace and purpose. Tom Gaffney
who’s passed has improved hugely and is beginning to dominate his forward pack. Jake Payne
made some good decisions, defended well and will continue to improve the more he attends training! Tom Puddle
controlled the backline well, put his body on the line in defence and kicked tactically very well. Despite all these fine efforts Ben McPherson was this weeks man of the match, his defensive effort in the 1st half was nothing short of heroic, not bad for a man that had run 2 miles in the morning!
Look forward to seeing you all at training this week!
