Fete intervenes

Swinbrooks future decided

The season finale hosted at Charlbury, due to the Witney feast, was of little interest to a Swifts team who had achieved safety in the previous week. However for Swinbrook defeat would give them a distinct possibility of demotion alongside Chinor.

However they still only managed to arrange to get 7 players. Woodenleg won the toss (now it doesn’t matter he’s on a winning streak.) Given the circumstances choosing to bat would normally not be the option, but wanting to give everyone a bit of the action meant that he opted to do so.

It has been a bit of a hit and miss season and this batting performance was too, sadly more misses than hits. Only Jonty McClaren really gave it a go top scoring with 36. Swifts were all out for 87. This represented a decent recovery total from a position of 11 for 5.

Tea was supplied by our hosts and was almost as good as this season leading Cromwell Craig tea award contender from earlier in the season.

Swinbrook came on after Tea and knocked the runs off for the loss of one wicket in 24.5 overs. A great spell of bowling from Jonty F1 McClaren 7 overs for 5 with 6 maidens and a supreme effort for little reward from the two Liams and Strudels was not enough to stymie the effort from the two almost twin like Parker brothers (in a Arnie Danny De Vito way).

Twos lose and the season finishes like it started with a defeat at Charlbury.

Not a great season for the seconds and of course a worst one for the firsts yet even with the large numbers of key players we lost from last season the club has managed nearly every week to put out 11 players in both teams. I believe that special thanks should go out to team captains Andy Fisher and Dave Woodward as well as all their deputies for all the work they have put in on all our behalves.

Also thanks must go to all the Ladies who put together our teas.

Sadly for the club Junior’s coach Andy Martindale has absented himself from the country and will be missing for next season. I would also like to thank him for all his efforts this year and hope that we can continue his good work with a junior section for next season.

One of the highlights for me this year has been the arrival of young talent Redd Pratley, Liam Morris, Dan Frost, Liam Readhead and Max Davison. If we can keep developing this talent and holding onto these guys the future of the club is assured.

Enjoy the winter and see most of you on the 8th.

Thank you and Good Night

I am not usually one for querying Umpires' decisions but it did seem that Swifts batsmen were on the receiving end of two or three dubious ones which otherwise could have made a difference to this game. Nevertheless, the "Seconds" can be reasonably satisfied with finishing midway in the table despite the problems of losing players to the poachers or retirement. The encouraging thing is the emergence of the talented youngsters who hopefully will be an asset next season, assuming we can keep them from the clutches of "you-know-whom".
On a commercial note: having seen some of the prices of equipment for 2012, I am somewhat alarmed at the inevitable increases. There are still end-of-season bargains available at considerably reduced prices, eg. bats, pads, etc. Mt advice is not to wait until the new prices come into effect.
