The season got underway on a wet Tuesday night as Witney Town entertained Reading Town. Playing a 3-5-2 formation Witney started brightly and Nick Thorne
got an early strike in within 30 seconds. On 8 minutes the Blanketmen were ahead after Adam Morris
' free kick was saved by Silver but landed at the feet of Christian Perkins
who flicked it over the line. 4 minutes later it was 3 nil after Mark Janes
shot was deflected in and Conor McDonagh
scored a great individual goal. Witney continued to dominate with Janes and Jermaine Ferreira
hitting good strikes at goal before Reading had their first attacks - first Lovelock went close and then Kameron Abbassi
was forced to clear onto the bar after half an hour. 1 minute later Witney scored their goal of the game. A great team move was started and finished by Adam Morris
after a 1-2 with Janes and the score was 4-0. Then out of the blue Hemmings pulled one back for Reading after some sloppy defending. But just before the break Denel Thomas
made it 5 after being put through by Ferreira and going round the keeper.
In front of the large attendance of 166 Reading came out for the second half fired up. Perkins was booked for a clumsy foul on the edge of the box. But then out of the blue Witney made it 6. Adam Morris
' corner was in before Silver could pull it away from goal. The linesman and referee consulted and decided it had crossed the line. Then came the goal of the game from McLean who hit an amazing 30 yarder. This inspired Reading more and two further goals arrived - the first after a corner was dropped and the ball bundle in by Mohammed and then Otudeko hit a cracking 20 yard daisy cutter in the corner and the fightback from nowhere was on.Foster then had to be sharp to block a one on one chance. The pressure was telling and Abbassi was booked for persistant fouling. Then Foster pulled off another great double save to keep the score at 6-4. On 72 minutes the arrival of Josias Carbon
settled the defence who reverted to a more solid 4-4-2 formation and this saw off the Reading threat. Conor McDonagh
eventually settled all nerves with a 2nd on the night - a beautiful left foot curler with 3 minutes to go.
A great start - great entertainment but still one or two things to work on defensively. Nevertheless the first 3 points in the bag. Next up Marlow at home in the FA Cup on Saturday.
