With two games remaining two wins could still keep Wivenhoe Town in the Premier Division, a win against Thetford would at least ensure some final day drama. The start of the game was delayed for 13 minutes due to an injury to one of the linesman during the warm up.
When the game did eventually start Wivenhoe created the first opportunities of the game. Connell had an effort at goal with the ball coming back to Keating but he was unable to get his shot away. Keating then created his own chance as he won a header which he then ran on to before shooting wide. Thetford then had a header go over the bar from a corner. Reece Keating was involved again following a surge forward from Andy Schofield, the defender found Reece making a run into the box but his shot was well saved. Wivenhoe just about defended a corner before Keating continued his attacks on the Theftford goal as this time a clever chip beat the keeper but also fell just over the cross bar. Thetford should perhaps have taken the lead when they sized on a missed tackle in the Wivenhoe defence but could only fire over when well placed. The home side then had an even better chance as a good shot produced an excellent block from Peter Haxell with the rebound being knocked over the bar.
With twenty five minutes of the game played Reece Keating then scored the goal his first half performance had deserved. Thetford allowed a Ben Lampon cross to bounce in the area with Keating getting his head to it and looping the ball over the Thetford keeper and into the back of the net. Ben Parkin almost made it two nil when a ball through the middle saw Parkin hold of the attentions of a defender long enough to get a shot away at the goal but it produced a good save from the keeper. Thetford then missed their own one on one opportunity with the attacker looking to score with the outside of his right foot rather than use his apparently less favoured but better positioned left. Thetford had the final opportunity of the half as they headed over from a corner.
The second half opened with Lewis Blanchett firing a free kick past the post. Peter Haxell then had to be on his toes to rush out and block away a promising Thetford attack. A cross into Thetford’s area saw Keating flick the ball on to Parkin but he was unable to get much on the ball and it was cleared away. The game then seemed to settle down with Wivenhoe in possession of the ball but unable to create many opportunities. Ben Parkin had Wivenhoe’s last clear chance of the game when he was put in on goal by Reece Keating but with a defender for company he was never able to settle on the ball and could only shoot over the bar. Marley Spindler also shot over from outside the area after good work from substitute Goodlake and Connell had a good cross to Parkin blocked out. Wivenhoe seemed happy to settle for what appeared to be a comfortable 1 - 0 win. The Dragons even spent several minutes taking the ball into the corner flag to waste time despite having good openings to get the ball into the area.
Then somehow, with just seconds of the game left, a ball into the Wivenhoe area created mayhem and Robbie Priddle of Thetford Town was given time in the area to shoot past Peter Haxell. It levelled the scores and sent Wivenhoe down with what proved to be the last meaningful kick of the game. The full time whistle blew almost immediately after the re-start and Wivenhoe Town were relegated to Division One.
