Wolverhampton Under 13 2009/10 Rugby Season Review
Staffordshire Shield Final Winners and 2nd Place in our Staffordshire League
Overview
This season has been a big step for our team playing 15-a-side rugby on a full sized pitch plus the competitive edge of league matches. We have definitely stepped up to the plate and made the transition exceptionally well, especially as we have only had a squad of 21 for the majority of 2009/10. It has been a very successful season, coming second in our league, only losing to Walsall the league winners, and unfortunately losing to Stafford in the semi finals of the Staffs Cup, who were the eventual winners. We played 15 games in total and only lost the two games (Walsall & Stafford) and lost by one try in extra time of the semi final of the Mold festival at the end of the season, which contained teams of a high standard and also having far bigger squads than us. This season’s success was only achieved with a lot of blood, sweat and tears along the way from players, coaches and parents. The players now look very smart on and off the pitch thanks to brand new match tops and embrodied shirts and club ties. We are earning praise from teams who have played us for the first time, Mold and Kesteven and have also had calls from others who are very keen to play us-Nottingham being one. Another first for the team was the hosting of Carlisle who were on tour, and their parents were highly impressed and extremely grateful for our hospitality.
The Team
This season we welcomed the new players of Matthew Evans, Amar and Callum and unfortunately didn’t get to squad of 25 we were aiming for. A number of players have started being involved in County level, Sean and Oliver are in the Staffordshire School of Rugby and are to be joined in the under 14’s final trial in September by Rob, Matthew Evans and Marinus. Scott is in Shropshire’s School of Rugby and TJ attended a trial for Hereford and Worcestershire County this week. Congratulations to all of these lads. A special mention must go to Oliver who is also in the Leicester Tigers Academy and was selected and played for England Independent Schools in their tour of Ireland, winning both games, in addition he has had one representative game for Staffordshire under14’s.
Register
An informal register of players attendance on Sundays’ has been taken but from now on all training and games will be logged and used as a coaches selection aid for all League games, Cups and Festivals.
Summer Training and Player Development
The coaches have decided to give everyone a rest for the month of May and are currently working on dates during the summer.Andy is hoping to arrange a weekend of activities at his Shawbury base and he is also investigating the possibility of some other different events for the lads. It is intended that the squad will benefit from additional and some specialist coaching (Refer to Section below) in order for the players to progress to the next playing and rugby knowledge level. In addition, we hope to provide each player with a matrix of what skills they possess, what areas need further development and what will be required to make them better players.
The Coaching Team and Equipment
This season we have seen Gareth Jones join us as well as Simon and Jim all become more involved in the team and this has been a considerable asset. Gwyn, Andy and myself have had a 3 hour meeting the other week and have discussed a review of the season, what we did well and what we could do better, and where we wish to move the team and players forward from the development side. In addition we have talked about trying to get specialist coaching via other club coaches or external sources and this week I have already had some success in contacting coaches who have agreed to help us. We have also discussed some new equipment for training, medicine balls, evasion belts, power bags and currently we are investigating costs.
During the forthcoming month’s the coaches will be attending various courses, Gareth Level 1, Andy Level 1 via the RAF plus a referees course, I will be trying for Level 2 and others doing an IRB Rugby Ready course. Gwyn is unable to make the Level 2 dates with me but we will look to book him on the next suitable course.
