Wolves go try crazy to keep promotion firmly in sight.

Wolverhampton continued their red hot form scoring 11 tries for the second week running

It was always a tough ask for bottom club Harborne to come to fortress Castlecroft and claim anything and in truth despite a spirited performance no one would be surprised at the end scoreline. The only surprise in the packed Wolverhampton club house was perhaps that captain Ian Harley only grabbed 1 try!

Once again I am struggling for exact descriptions of all the trys so I'll just list the try scorers. Alex Bird 3 tries, Phil Goodison 2 tries, Callum Wellings 2 tries, Ian Harley 1 try, Gary Hill 1 try, Ben Barnes 1 try and Leigh French 1 try, 7 of these 11 tries were converted by Ben Barnes who kicked superbly all day as he chases down that top points scorer spot for the 2nd consecutive season, despite it must be said some vociferous heckling from "supporters" on the sideline. It was 35 - 0 at half time, by the way.

Whilst the score line was very pleasing it still wasn't enough to earn a smile from bad cop/bad cop coaching partnership of Port and Perry. The hard task masters have requested a complete performance from both forwards and backs all season. Despite the best attempts of all players this has never really happened. The last two weeks have been close but on both occasions 10minute spells of madness where far too many penalties are conceded have blighted the side. an 80 minute performance against teams struggling would surely result in even more points for the black machine.

There are several contenders for MVP this week, the man from Rhodesia Russ Munro continues to marshal the backs and get them sparking in a way that has clearly been missing all season. Special mention also has to go to Chip Shop Callum Wellings, the captain of the under 19s has fitted into the 1st team set up seamlessly (even if getting into the shirt is more of a struggle) and despite only having minimal sleep after celebrating his birthday, he managed to put in a dominant shift and was rewarded with a brace of tries. It was noted his second half work rate increases greatly when we play towards the Twin Dolphins fast food emporium in the 2nd half, surely this is a coincidence though?

Despite several candidates there is one man who stood head and shoulders above any other on the park. Alex Bird's return to full back after injury and personal problems has been a fantastic bonus to Wolverhampton 1st XV. I'm sure the Harborne full back for one will be glad they wont be crossing paths for a while, Birdy's spaghetti legs side step left him on his bottom on several occasions.

Just to clear up the promotion picture for all interested. As it stands Veseyans have all but won the league (needing just 2 points from 3 games) and go up as champions leaving Wolverhampton and Newcastle fighting for second place. Second place will guarantee promotion as there is no play off for this league.

Wolverhampton are 5 points ahead of Newcastle with a vastly superior points difference meaning we require a win and one bonus point from our last 2 games to secure a return to level 7 rugby.

The last 2 games of the season see Wolverhampton travel to Handsworth for what, going off previous encounters, will be a very tight game and welcome Uttoxeter to Castlecroft for the final game of the season,
Neither of these games are shoe ins, Handsworth will like nothing more than to wreck Wolves promotion and Uttoxeter are fighting for their survival at the bottom of the training,

We have 5 training sessions between now and the Handsworth game, this must be attended by all 1st team squad members.
