Garforth may be a league above, but definitely a class below!!!
It was meant to be a miss match on paper in this important first round cup tie as the league six Wombwell 2nd XI breezed into Leeds to play Garforth 1st XI who were flying high in the league above. The paper was well and truly screwed up and filed under 'R' for rubbish! Unbeaten Wombwell are flying on the crest of a cicketing wave and feared no one.
After losing yet another toss captain Craig Bond's boys were confused by Garforth's decision to bat first on a damp and unpredictable wicket. The confusion was justified as Garforth were bowled out for a sorry 91 within 30 overs. Only one shot wonder Kumar with 24 and three big sixes and Appleyard with a hard fought 38 provided any resistance to the Mainers. A superb opening spell by the ever consistant and dangerous Matty Sewell with an outstanding three wickets for four runs set the trend. Surprisingly he was rested after four overs when it appeared he could do no wrong.
Support bowling from Neil Spruce and Corey Wyatt kept the run rate at a pedestrian pace and Spruce chipped in with two wickets. The best was well and truly left till last! Young Bradley Kerr was almost un-playable with a ferocious spell of accurate and pacey bowling. Returning tremendous figures of five wickets for eight runs off just over six over put the Wombwellers in the driving seat and everyone else wondering why Kerr wasn't bowling up front! The reality is the Main have a depth of talent. Sewell, Kerr, Brampton, Spruce and Wyatt and quality players missing for this cup tie mean its all looking good this season.
Chasing a low score the Mainers lost early wickets with both openers gone for three, but Danny Harper played a sensible and assured knock for 19 and the 'White Lara', Neil Spruce with a franetic 37 made it plain saling for the Barnsley based team. Captain Bond and Mark Brampton saw the boys home in style and gave Wombwell five straight wins.
Easy picking for the in form team who make playing cricket fun. On a sour not it can only be said that the teas at Garforth were exactly the same as the cricket team, didn't get enough and lacked substance!
I feel a cup run and topping the league for an infalable Wombell this season!
