A Well Deserved Win
Woodhouse Warriors travelled away to play Keighley ‘A’ and what should have been a thirty minute journey to get there it took some players a hour and a half so Woodhouse had no time to warm up and they also didn’t have a full side either.
Keighley’s game tactics seemed to be to slow down Woodhouse’s attack whenever possible but they were penalised by the referee for doing this and because of this Woodhouse scored their first try. Woodhouse were working well together with some good passing moves and individual drives pulling the Keighley defence back and forth before the ball was sent to Prop Forward Ralph Steele, from a cut out pass from Scrum Half Lee Frost and Centre Jamie Calvert converted. 0 -6
Keighley were not making their job any easier because again they gave another penalty away for a head high tackle on Captain Bones (David Walker) .Woodhouse took advantage with again some good hard work from Second Row Chris Mannion and Prop Forward Hotdog (Danny Coates), the ball was then sent out wide to Jamie who was caught short of the line and then with a quick play of the ball Bones stepped the defence to score taking two would be tacklers with him and Jamie converted 0 - 12.
Unfortunately Woodhouse decided to get involved with sledging and handbags which took Woodhouse off their game and in turn giving Keighley the opportunity to score two unanswered tries and one was converted taking the score to 10 - 12.
Woodhouse were now looking a bit shaky and they needed some inspiration and this came from Centre Gavin Lunn who plucked the ball out of the Keighley players hand and scored the try before Keighley even realised what had happened and Jamie converted taking the half time score to 10 - 18, there could have been another try but Gavin had his second try disallowed.
2nd.Half
Woodhouse started the second half strong, their pressure on Keighley paid off forcing a knock on early in the tackle count and from this Woodhouse were attacking the Keighley line and then one of the Keighley players shot out of line to put a big shot on but this gave Gavin the opportunity to burst through the open gap taking on the last line of defence before passing the ball to Hooker Rab (Nathan Gill) who scored a try and Jamie converted. 10 - 24.
Keighley were quick to reply with a try when they caught Woodhouse asleep at the scrum and they also converted the try. 16 - 24.
Woodhouse did not let this deter them and they immediately hit back containing Keighley in their own half and again they gave away a penalty for offloading after being held. With good drives from Ralph and Chris they drove towards the sticks, the ball was sent out wide from Bones to Jamie who immediately passed it back inside for a well worked move to Fullback Tom Tetlow to score and Jamie converted again16 - 30.
Woodhouse were now playing patient rugby and trying to play as much game time in the Keighley’s half and again Keighley did not help themselves by giving penalties away and wanting to get involved at the play of the ball. Woodhouse to their credit listened to the coach and did not get involved and received the penalty five yards into their half, Jamie elected to kick for the two sending it straight through the upright, Keighley added more to their woes when they kicked out on the full giving Jamie the chance to kick from half way which he successfully did making the score 16 - 34.
The final try of the game came from Woodhouse in the next set of six when they were attacking the Keighley right hand side defence, the ball was sent to Bones who passed to Jamie who dummied inside to ever present Tom before passing the ball out wide to Substitute Winger Germaine Hudson for him to score and Jamie converted taking the final score to 16 - 40.
This was an excellent performance from the whole of the Woodhouse team with the backs taking pressure off the forwards running the ball in like props and the forwards having to do more time on the pitch having no forwards on the bench to replace them and arriving late and getting involved in the first half they turned it around and came away with the two points. Well done lads!
