A Close Local Derby Match
Woodhouse Warriors travelled away to play West Leeds in the local derby. The two teams are made up of players that have played alongside each other in the past so it was the making of a good game and West Leeds were out to get the win after losing to Woodhouse in the reverse fixture.
Woodhouse started off badly when from the kick off they knocked it into touch turning the possession back over to West Leeds but they withstood a determined attack and defended well against a drop out. When West Leeds put an early kick in Second Row Brian Lowe picked it up and made good yards taking it to nearly the half way line and the Prop Forward Hotdog (Danny Coates) and Second Row Chris Mannion took it further before Scrum Half Ross Hammill made more valuable yards then West Leeds were penalised for a head high shot on Loose Forward Jamie Calvert. Then with quick drives from Stand Off Tony Haigh and Brian, Hotdog came close and he managed to offload the ball and found its way to Full Back Danny Rogers who was caught up on the line and then Jamie scored but he was unable to convert due to the strong winds. 0 - 4.
Woodhouse had a few opportunities to score and the best of chances was when young Ross collected a chip over from Jamie and it took three defenders to hold him up which is no mean fete for a little guy, but it was West Leeds who would score the next two converted tries taking the half time score to 12 - 4. .
2nd half.
Woodhouse were the first to score in the opening stages of the second half after West Leeds put a kick through for Tony to pick it up and he raced down field and then Jamie put another chip in and Centre Gavin Lunn collected the ball and scored out wide but unfortunately Jamie missed the conversion 12 - 8.
Unfortunately for Woodhouse they lost a couple of subs due to injuries which put the strain on Woodhouse and it was a tough game and it took West Leeds who went down to twelve men till the closing stages of the game to seal the win when they scored an unconverted try making the final score 16 - 8.
This game was played in bad weather conditions but in good spirit and it was a tough fought game from both sides spoilt only by the man in the middle with the whistle.
Man of the match
1st Jamie Calvert
2nd Ross Hammill
3rd Ralph Steele
