Woodley Sports 4 v Lancaster City 1

The Steelmen put a end unbeaten run

Woodley Sports Manager Gareth McClelland describe Tuesdays nights semi final win over Cammell Laird as his best game so far, well he didn’t have to wait long as The Steelmen completely out played the UniBond North's table toppers.

League leaders Lancaster City arrived at the Neil Rourke Stadium on Saturday looking to extend their twelve match winning streak at a Woodley Sports side that had been comprehensively beaten 7-1 at the Giant Axe Stadium in October.

However the Steelmen, fresh from their 4-2 victory in midweek away to Cammell Laird, which saw them progress to the final of the Cheshire FA Senior Cup, were in no mood for a repeat of that performance. Sports belied their lowly league position by thrashing the League leaders.

From the kick off Woodley took the game to their visitors and City keeper Martin Fearon brilliantly saved Dennis Sherriff's volley. The pressure told five minutes later when Danny Queeley's strike beat Fearon from 18 yards. On 29 minutes teenage star Antoni Sarcevic finished off a mazy run from the halfway line with drive into the top corner of Fearon's goal and it was 3-0 two minutes before the break when Queeley slotted home to leave the Dolly Blues shell-shocked.

Any hopes Lancaster had of making a comeback disappeared within 90 seconds of the restart when Rochdale loanee Dennis Sherriff powered home from the edge of the penalty area and City's hopes of extending their unbeaten run to 13 games had vanished.

Sports keeper Liam Higginbotham then saved from Jordon Connerton before the goal machine from Lancaster claimed a consolation on 87 minutes, but it was too little too late.
