Copperas Hill 1 - 6 Woodstreet

Woodstreet sent shockwaves through the Liverpool County Division One after thumping title-rivals Copperas Hill 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Jonny Dunn continued his comeback from injury with his second in as many games to equalise after the visitors had trailed at the break.

Matty Hints celebrated his 26th birthday week with a double and Dude returned to goal scoring form, hitting a hat-trick to cap an emphatic win.

After showcasing an uglier element to their game last week, Woodstreet turned on the style in the second half smashing six goals in the space of 20 minutes.

The away side had initially struggled to get to grips with Copperas Hill, who had started the day in third.

Their direct approach led to the first goal which Woodstreet will have been disappointed to concede.

One long ball from back to front dropped right at the feet of the hosts left winger who had the simple task of lifting the ball over the on-rushing Adam Grace.

The opening goal sprung Woodstreet into action with Dunn going close on two occasions.

Tireless winger, Ged Moore, crossed from the right and the ball fell at the feet of Dunn but he lost his footing at the crucial moment allowing the goalkeeper to gather.

His second chance came on the stroke of half-time.

Jordan Scott, burst forward from the middle of the park and slipped Dunn through on the goal but the Copperas keeper read the situation well as the forward tried to round the shot-stopper.

The longer the game went on, Copperas Hill’s goal threat diminished as the Woodstreet defence easily controlled the aerial threat of the home side.

It wasn’t long after the interval before Woodstreet’s dominance told.
Hints sprung a counter attack and his lovely floated pass found Dunn clear of the hosts defence.

On this occasion, the powerful forward opted to lob the ball over the Copperas keeper to level the contest.

The home side’s keeper was soon picking the ball out of his net again for the second time in the space of a couple of minutes.

Hints, after brilliant build-up play from Woodstreet captain Perry Hughes, found room on the left side of the box and coolly curled the ball in to the far corner to turn the game on its head just ten minutes in to the second half.

Seemingly unable to comprehend the quick-fire double, Copperas Hill conceded again with a comical piece of defending.

A long ball saw a mix-up between defender and keeper allowing MeGarry to take control of the situation and gleefully fire home a third.

Woodstreet were in no mood for taking sympathy on the Norris Green based side and hit a fourth.

Hints, was the man who capitalised on another Copperas mistake.
The midfielder read the opposition full back’s lazy pass across goal and ruthlessly slotted the ball low to the keeper’s right and the game was all but wrapped up.

But, that didn’t stop Woodstreet adding another two.

The combative forward partnership of Dunn and MeGarry were a constant nuisance for the host’s backline throughout and the duo slowly wore the Copperas defence in to submission.

It was MeGarry who was the profiteer.

The striker was unfortunate not to find himself on the score sheet in last week’s win over Walton Community but grabbed the match ball with two trademark strikes.

The second of his three and Woodstreet’s fifth - MeGarry powered forward turning the Copperas defence inside out before smashing the ball beyond the statuesque goalkeeper.

He capped off a fine personal and team performance with a similar goal - droving in from the left before advancing and rounding the home side’s keeper for his side’s sixth.

It was an emphatic win and one which sent a statement of intent to the rest of division.

A damaging loss for Copperas Hill but they were aware they were outclassed once Woodstreet found their feet in the game.

Two very different but very impressive wins on the bounce have propelled Hughes’ men into third and in this form no one will relish facing this Woodstreet side.
