Dave Whalley was crowned Woolston Rovers ‘Community Hero’ at the Man of Steel Awards Dinner at The Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday evening.

From being a toddler Dave was always on the touchline of Woolston Rovers watching his Dad playing. During the mid to late 1970s he did train and play with one of the early Woolston Junior teams.

During his teenage years he developed the skill of keeping match records and producing match reports and when in 1986 Woolston Rovers became of 10 teams to form the first National League Dave took over as Secretary of the first team, keeping the records and producing the match reports etc.

From 1986 onwards to the present day he has always been fully committed to doing the Team Secretary's, PRO and Treasurer’s work. This included the same work with Woolston Rovers and Warrington Wizards during a 10 year spell at Wilderspool Stadium; his voice also became familiar over the tannoy system during this period.

During the spell at Wilderspool his administration and PRO skills were noticed by Warrington Wolves and at the end of 2009 he was asked to join them as Team Manager of the Under 20s Academy side.

Dave, whilst being involved with the Wolves, now as Under 19s and Reserves Team Manager he has also remained fully committed to Woolston Rovers, fulfilling the Club PRO and Open Age Treasurer’s roles up to the present day.

Throughout all his time being involved with rugby Dave has always carried out his duties with a smile on his face and has the gift of getting on with everyone in the sport that he is involved with.
