Woolston Rovers ‘A’ bounced back to winning ways with a very entertaining high scoring victory over Orrell St James ‘A’

in the NWML Division Four on Saturday afternoon at Monks Sports Club to remain at the top of the table.

Orrell opened the scoring after six minutes when second row Adam Lavin scored under the posts. Scrum half Danny Gregory converted but Rovers replied six minutes later when they created an overlap for scrum half Ryan Cosgrove to put full back Liam Sullivan over in the left corner. Sullivan landed a fine touchline conversion.

Rovers went ahead for the first time just after the midway point of the half when a dropped ball from Orrell was pounced on by winger Alex Dunne who kicked it forward before collecting and going over under the posts. Sullivan converted but Orrell responded when hooker Callum Wood broke through the Rovers defence to score at the left of the posts. Gregory converted to level the score once again.

Right on the stroke of half time a lovely ball from Rovers stand off Olly Hands found centre Jay Ryder and he put Dunne over in the right corner to make the half time score 16-12 in Rovers favour.

A minute into the second half Orrell’s Wood went from dummy half and shot through a gap to score on the right. Gregory converted to put his side back in front once again but that lead was short lived as five minutes later another fine pass from Hands put second row Sam Vernon over under the posts. Sullivan added the conversion.

Rovers created a two score gap for the first time in the game when in-form hooker Adam Files went from dummy half to score under the posts. Sullivan converted but yet again the visitors responded when full back Marcus Grimshaw broke through some weak tackling to score in the left corner.

The end-to-end nature of the game continued when Rovers moved downfield courtesy of a fine break from Ryder and his pass found scrum half Ryan Cosgrove who raced over under the posts to give Sullivan a simple conversion.

Two minutes from time Orrell gave themselves a glimmer of gaining something from the game when winger Ben Leaford scored in the right corner and Gregory goaled superbly but Rovers were in no mood to let the lead slip and calmly saw the game out to register a 34-28 success.

The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers full back Liam Sullivan. He was very well supported by hooker Adam Files and substitute Richard Potts.

After the game Rovers ‘A’ coach Andy Penny said, “We put in a more solid performance against a plucky Orrell side than we did last week and we were delighted to get back to winning ways immediately. The heat played a massive part and the big forwards had to battle through it, which they did for the most part. We played some really nice rugby and scored some top quality tries but we switched off a few times and that allowed Orrell back into the game. We have plenty to improve on before our next game in a fortnight at Runcorn and we will be working hard on these areas to make sure we are ready for that challenge.”
