Woolston Rovers suffered a second narrow defeat in succession when they went down at Stanningley

in a really close fought Kingstone Press National Conference League Division Three game on Saturday afternoon.

Stanningley opened the scoring in the eighth minute when pressure on the Rovers line paid off as centre Thomas Sharp put winger Joe Brier over in the right corner and eight minutes later prop forward Tom Kent stepped round the Rovers defence to score on the right. Stand off Niall Murphy added the conversion.

Three minutes before the break Rovers got back into the game when substitute Danny Griffiths found centre Dan Fearnley out wide and he went over in the right corner to make the half time score 10-4 in Stanningley’s favour.

Twelve minutes into the second half Stanningley moved two scores clear once again when Sharp scored on the right. Murphy converted but five minutes later Rovers responded when a high kick by winger Will Chadwick bounced awkwardly and scrum half Conner Muir was the quickest to react as he collected the ball and scored under the posts. Chadwick added the conversion.

Just after the hour Stanningley once again re-affirmed their control of the game when Murphy went over for a try that he converted himself but then with eight minutes remaining Rovers gave themselves a lifeline when some slick passing saw the ball move across the field to second row Sean Conway who scored at the left of the posts. Chadwick added the conversion but despite finishing the game on the front foot they were unable to get a further score and Stanningley held on for a 22-16 victory.

Best for Rovers were winger Will Chadwick, substitute Danny Griffiths, prop forward Ryan Hickman and scrum half Conner Muir.

After the game Rovers Head Coach John Fieldhouse said, “It was a frustrating day with another narrow defeat; we played some great rugby at times and managed to score three top quality tries but we need to be more ruthless as we are making lots of clean breaks but not converting enough of our chances, exactly like against Rylands last week, and it is costing us dearly. We are learning the hard way at the moment but I am confident that we can turn things around when we start to finish off our scoring opportunities. It will also help when we get some of our key players back from injury. As last week we gave two more of our promising Under 18s players their debuts; Kieran Moore and Sean Millington both came into the side and did a great job for us, showing that they do not look out of place at this level.”
