Woolston Rovers ‘A’ produced a very resilient display to gain a hard fought narrow victory at Little Hulton Reds

in the NWML Division Four fixture on Saturday afternoon to remain four points behind league leaders Langworthy Reds with two games in hand.

Little Hulton opened the scoring in the fifth minute when centre Aiden Knight scored in the left corner but four minutes later Rovers hit back when a fine ball from scrum half Kieran Moore found full back Liam Sullivan linking into the line and he put centre Jake Eccles over in the left corner.

Rovers moved ahead just after the midway point of the half when winger Jack Holt found Eccles who then put stand off Olly Hands over under the posts. Sullivan converted but it was then Little Hulton’s turn to respond when Knight broke through some weak defence to score on the right. Stand off Wes Winder added the conversion to level matters once again.

A minute before the break the Reds hit the front once again when Knight broke clear and raced over for his hat trick under the posts. Winder converted to give his side a 16-10 half time advantage.

Two minutes into the second half Little Hulton edged further ahead when Winder landed a penalty goal after Rovers were caught offside but four minutes later a fine break by Rovers prop forward Johnny Wilson paved the way for Hands to go over on the right.

Little Hulton were reduced to twelve men when full back Jimmy Mason was sent off for a head butt and Rovers took advantage just before the hour when a nice ball from hooker Callum Moore found second row Patryk Mazur who raced forty metres to score under the posts. Sullivan added the conversion to give his side the lead once more.

Rovers were now in the ascendancy and a great break from second row Tom Fagan split the Little Hulton defence and he found K Moore who sent Mazur on a fifty metre dash to score on the left. Sullivan converted and shortly afterwards Mazur got the ball from dummy half on his own twenty metre line and sprinted eighty metres to score his hat trick under the posts. Sullivan added the conversion.

Little Hulton refused to give up and centre Alan Hargreaves broke through to score in the left corner and right on time Knight raced forty five metres to score his fourth try under the posts. Winder added the conversion but it wasn’t quite enough as Rovers were left to celebrate an excellent 32-28 success.

The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers second row Patryk Mazur. He was very well supported by full back Liam Sullivan and prop forward Tom Woodward.

After the game Rovers ‘A’ joint coach Andy Penny said, “That was a superb win for us in difficult circumstances. We had several players unavailable but the lads that have come in did really well and I was delighted for all seventeen who have given their all. We had to dig really deep at times but at no stage did we panic and we stuck together and got our just rewards. After losing last time out we couldn’t afford another reverse so we are all made up that we were able to get the win.”
