All the players responded well to the encouragement
Bredon vs Worcester Wolverines – Sunday 24th February 2013
This week saw a team of 12 Wolverines head to Bredon to test ourselves against a reputably strong Bredon side. The low temperature, hint of frost and light snow showers didn’t dent our spirits and once we had braved a few warm up games the players were fired up and ready to kick off.
Worcester started very brightly, with Zeb immediately collecting a couple of quick tags and Nathan, Ollie and Rhys assisting. From the resulting turnover, we broke from our own line, first with Rhys making good ground, Oscar taking the ball on with some great changes of direction before passing to Ollie Lewis to make the first of many spectacular tries. Bredon replied immediately and scored again, showing that they had good handling skills and an ability to keep the ball alive to complement their speedsters. Nathan and Ollie made several breaks forward, ball in two hands, looking for gaps before one of the best passages of play we have seen on an away match. Rhys, Tyrel and Ollie all weaved from our own line up to the halfway line before passing to Nathan, who continued across the pitch towards the corner before a chasing Bredon player made a last ditch attempt at a tag. He missed, but Nathan continued running, looked for a pass and tried to offload to Ollie. Unfortunately the ball went to ground but all the players did exactly what they should have done and at half time we told them that if they continued that way then it would soon work! At the start of the next half, a great series of tags where good ground was made by Zeb, Sam and Jaydon finished with Tyrel’s last past going to ground as he tried to squeeze the ball to the last man. Bredon had defended well on their line and were quicker on the loose ball. After two quick passess, Bredon picked up the ball and ran virtually the whole length of the pitch. Tyrel didn’t like the look of this and chased the player from one corner of the pitch to the other, tagging him at the last possible moment to prevent a try. Bredon scored from the resulting pass but Tyrel showed great perseverance and speed to make the initial tag. At this point the game started to evolve a little, with Bredon’s coach Johnnie allowing the players to compete for the ball when it went to the floor. This was different to what we have done before but it taught the players and the coaches something a valuable lesson – you have to really look after the ball. Having heard the Bredon players respond quickly to Johnnie’s question of “whose ball is a loose ball?” – “ours” their players responded and competed for any balls bouncing (or possibly squelching) on the floor. I was impressed how quickly our players sussed this out and it is things like this that are the reasons I love playing at other club grounds – you just never know what is going to happen. In a competitive period, Rhys made a sidestepping break forward, Nathan took the ball on and was again unlucky to score with Ollie on hand again with yet another Ash-Splash. As the competition for the ball on the floor ramped up, so did the defence, with Worcester led by Sam and Archie in particular putting together a series of six tags to push Bredon back from our line into their own half. Oscar made very clever use of the touchline to usher one of their players into a touch and force a turnover without laying a finger on him which was good to see and Rhys caught an amazing diving tag to save a certain break being made. Ollie finished the match with 4 tries and Sam picked up one too with quick thinking to follow up after a scorching run from Tom O where he was unlucky to get tagged on the line. Final score 5-5.
The second match saw more competition for the ball, including on the floor and the players looked like they were relishing it! Tom O made a good tag from the start and this helped our whole defence hold firm to keep Bredon out. Sam N’s running lines from defence were confusing Bredon’s defence and led to him picking up a valuable first try. Bredon were also working the spaces well, running around our shuffling defence to even things up. Tyrel had a great run from the re-start and was starting to find numerous gaps, always being unlucky in just being pulled bag by a last-ditch Bredon effort. As the players got stuck in, we saw several players emerge from the wilderness of winter’s training in the shed to make their mark on the game and none more so in the second game than Marcus. He started ripping tags off everywhere and made the first of several runs down the right wing making important ground, offloaded to Tom O and again on to Ollie who was on hand to finish off. Archie also came into his element and possibly giving Stuart Lancaster a solution to the number 6 position against Italy, diving on every loose ball, chasing everyone down, making breaks and demonstrating his new improved side step several times. A rejuvenated Nathan chased a certain try down across half a pitch width before making several more breaks to complement Oscar and Tyrel’s good continuity and was unlucky to not get on the score sheet himself. Joel also grew in confidence and after an initial run where he was forced backwards, made several key passes when in similar positions which showed how quickly he had learnt a different way we could keep the ball. His grab of the ball off one of our players on the floor before Bredon got to it stopped an almost certain turnover so well done Joel in your first away match! By the end of the match, Ollie had picked up a further three tries, all with notable mid-difficulty technical dives, Sam had caused constant problems to pick up 2 tries, the best of which was after a break from Tyrel, Sam followed up half a pitch length to take an offload in the try zone to touch down. Final score – a competitive and thoroughly enjoyable 6-6
It was a great match to be involved in today for so many reasons. The weather was challenging, the opposition were competitive at the same time as being fair and Johnnie managed the game very fairly whilst still allowing the game to flow. All the players responded well to the encouragement, the rules adaptations and the flexibility to have slightly more on the pitch to make sure everyone kept warm. Thanks for Bredon for being excellent hosts and we look forward to playing them later in the season! Thanks to all the parents for bearing the cold, mingling with the Bredon parents and being so supportive on the touchlines.
