Worcester Colts dominate Newbury in Cup penaltyfest

Worcester Colts debuted in the inaugural RFU Under 18s National Cup at Weston’s Field on Sunday 14th January with a convincing 7 try victory over the spirited visitors from Berkshire.

An early pushover try from Captain Will Mathews and rampaging run from recently re-energised prop Matt Long reflected the home team’s dominance up front in a feisty encounter in which the home team conceded an astonishing 22 penalties against 2 for the away team.

The hosts strong forwards play provided the moment of the match when Hooker Matt Willet demonstrated superb handling skills in a show and go that left Newbury trailing in his wake as he sprinted 30 yards to touch down to give Worcester a 19 - 0 half time lead.

The second half started with an excellent powerful run from debutant Tom Matthews. Willet made a second telling contribution with fast hands to offload to flanker Finn O’Toole who dotted down from 5 metres.
Flanker Alfie Bayley completed a compelling show by the Worcester boys with a thrusting run that tore through the tiring Newbury defence.

The visitors deserve praise for a refusal to lie down and putting up a combative performance despite being on the on the back foot throughout. Fly half Ben Llewellyn kicked superbly with some accurate and powerful kicks from hand to add to his four successful conversions.

Worcester will host Hornets RFC from Weston Super Mare the next round on February 11.
