Narrow North Mids Final Defeat For Wanders
The Wanderers lost the North Mids Cup by 20 points to 18 to Newport Salop in a tense final at DK RFC.
Playing into a strong wind the Wanderers kept in touch with Newport thanks to the accurate boot of Tom Biggs.
A penalty try eased the Newport nerves following a great opportunist drop goal by their scrum half.
The half time score was 13 points to 3!
The Wanderers began the second half well, dominating the early possession and territory, Biggs knocked over a penalty and converted a Kieran Morris try to tie the score.
But, then came the first of two highly controversial decisions, both influenced by a touch judge.
The award of a try, duly converted gave Newport a 7 point lead, which was cut to two following a wonderful individual try from Matt Marskell.
The second incident led to a straight red card for the Wanderers Chris Griffiths for an alleged head butt.......!
The Wanderers had the better of the final quarter but, failed to capitalise on the territory and possession they enjoyed despite playing with 14 men.
Our congratulations to Newport Salop on their win, a big thank you to DK RFC for the use of their facilities and, a well done to the tournament organiser Nigel Banwell.
Finally, to all our supporters thank you very much and we look forward to seeing you all next season.
