Whitchurch 39--Worcester Wanderers 20

Ignore the scoreline-----,a really enjoyable game

The Wanderers travelled to Whitchurch on Saturday and lost an entertaining game by 39 points to 20.

An error in communications meant the Wanderers travelled with only 15 players but, despite the depleted numbers the players put in a workmanlike shift and were in contention for the majority of the game.

Despite holding the territorial sway in the early exchanges the Wanderers failed to take advantage and were hit with two tries from Whitchurch in almost their first ventures into the Wanderers half, they were well taken chances but, the Wanderers were to rue their own missed opportunities.

A Tom Biggs penalty provided welcome respite as the Whitchurch scrum began to dominate the set piece.

A killer third try seemed to put the Wanderers out of contention as Whitchurch sensed an opportunity to put themselves out of sight.

The Wanderers though gathered themselves and having repelled another Whitchurch surge, Biggs angled a kick deep into the Whitchurch half and there they stayed until Paul Burton scored a fine try, he started and finished, following good support work from James Aston; Biggs narrowly missing the conversion.

The Wanderers attacked from the kick off but, having opened up the Whitchurch defence following drives from Tom Dodge, Ben Rhodes and Richard Ralph, James Priddey just failed to hang onto the off load with the line at his mercy and, the half time whistle blew!

The Wanderers leaked an early try in the second half to find themselves 18 points in arrears but, back they came again as the big Whitchurch pack began to tire, Sam Harper nipped in for a try following good work from Biggs, Mike Dodge and Burton; Biggs converting.

Whitchurch kept their margin with another penalty before Harper scored again to give the Wanderers hope.

Whitchurch stretched their lead to 12 points but, the Wanderers pressed for their fourth try, Harper and Andy Reid were denied and two other decent opportunities came to nothing before Whitchurch's pack took control of a driving maul to complete the scoring for the day.

Whitchurch deserved their win but, the Wanderers can count themselves unlucky not to have come away with a bonus point following a battling performance in the Shropshire sun.
