First win of the season coincided with the first home game.

The Wanderers recorded their first win of the season.

It was a much-anticipated match, the first to be played on our home ground this season. Life on the road had not given us the returns we wanted in terms of results and points. From a very unfamiliar position at the foot of the league table, the wanderers knew they had to start taking more points from every game ahead.

Crew and Nantwich were the first league visitors to Westons. They are a strong and powerful team, who pose a threat in many area of the pitch. It was all played with the backdrop of the construction of the new club house. The scale and size of which will be a true asset to the club going forward.

In wet conditions a quick and expansive game was not going to happen, but Worcester tried to stick to the game plan, while Crew and Nantwich ball carrying power game was brining them a good degree of success.

The early victories came from the powerful Worcester scrum, it kept up the good form that brought us success at Stoke last week. Tom Biggs was able to get the scoreboard moving with some well-taken penalty kicks. Worcester applied lots of early pressure, but it was a penalty against Worcester that allowed the visitors to get out of there half and get territory in the Worcester 22. The power game from the line out and resultant scrums were too much to for the home team to keep them out of the try area. Coach Jon Perks was desperate for his team to build phases and move the bigger team around, but maybe a few nerves or excitement of playing at home meant players were trying offloads that were not on, or loosing the ball in contact, which meant sustained pressure could not be achieved.

A very even game was changed when the influential visitors centre saw a red card for what the referee judged to be a tip tackle, not long after he had scored a superb solo try right under the Worcester posts.

Worcester trailing started to move the ball more and played with purpose, Dave Whiting was introduced, which coincided with a more purposeful and direct approach to attack. First team debutant Daniel Patrice, scored a superb try to get Worcester with in touch of the win. A period of uncontested scrums had to take place as Crew and Nantwich had a prop sin binned for persistent offences at scrum time. The uncontested scrums actually worked in the visitors favour as it allowed them to launch the powerful back row to make Worcester defence have to work very hard. Worcester had one more try in them scored by the powerful wing Mike Croade, who is making a good impression in an unfamiliar position.

To say Worcester won ugly is true but the 21-19 victory is deserved, especially after the hard work done on the road for such little return.
