Trophy tears

It is nearly five years since Reds’ magnificent FA Trophy win at AFC Wimbledon but, sadly, not a single victory in the competition since.

That was our best ever result in the Trophy but masks what is a poor record overall. Since that memorable January afternoon in 2010, we have lost to Stevenage Borough (next round), Chasetown, Boston United, Ossett Town and Hednesford Town – the latter four at the first hurdle.

Clitheroe won’t be in any mood to ease Reds’ Trophy pain, as the Evo-Stik First Division North outfit go into this First Round Qualifying tie bang in form. They have won their last four league and cup encounters and have lost only once in nine outings.

Gavin Skelton will have more defensive options available for the game at Shawbridge (3pm) but Kyle May will not feature. Efforts to bring in a ‘new’ forward failed to meet the noon (Friday) registration deadline.

Clitheroe have been skippered by ex. Red, David Lynch, in recent matches and it was his winning goal that secured their passage through to this round at Droylsden’s expense. “Lynchy” never scored a competitive goal for Reds but will he get on the score sheet on Saturday afternoon?

Gareth Arnison might fancy his chances of adding to his Trophy portfolio too. He once scored twice for Reds’ Reserves at Clitheroe in a 6-1 Lancashire League win nine years ago. That was the last time we played there and, prior to that, it took an early headed goal from Paul Stewart to secure a narrow North West Counties League success back in April, 1999.

Updates on the game will be on BBC Radio Cumbria, with coverage also available on the Live Scoreboard facility via the website.

Should the game result in a draw, the replay will be at Borough Park on Tuesday.
